FROSTBURG, Md. - Thomas More scored 13 second quarter points to rally past Frostburg State for a 13-7 win, Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.
Freshman Monty Collier rushed for 133 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries to lead the Saints, (4-2) to their second-straight win.
FSU (0-5) opened the scoring on it’s first possession of the game, marching 67 yards on nine plays, taking a 7-0 lead. Frostburg State had four plays over 10 yards on the drive including a 17-yard dash into the endzone by junior quarterback Andre Dixon (Washington, D.C./Eleanor Roosevelt).
On their second drive, the Bobcats put together another solid drive, 75 yards on 14 plays, but turnd the ball over at the TMC 15 with a fumble to end the first quarter.
Both teams were unable to move the football on their next two drives, but Thomas More got on the board with its third possession of the second quarter. The Saints started on their 24 yardline and covered 76 yards on nine plays to even the score a seven. Collier was the workhouse of the drive, running seven times for 62 yards including a 13-yard score.
The TMC defense held Frostburg State to just one yard on three plays on the ensuing possession and forced the Bobcats to punt from their own 20 yardline.
Senior Chris Willis fielded the punt at his own 41, and raced 59 yards for a touchdown to give TMC a 13-7 lead. Senior Justin Bressler (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) would block the extra point for the Bobcats to keep the score the same.
Frostburg State would receive the kickoff and run one play before the end of the half.
The third quarter didn’t see much offense as the teams combined for just 33 yards on 32 plays and five punts.
FSU had a pair of chances in the fourth when the special team’s came up big with two blocked punts. The first came when junior cornerback Derek Schrader (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) blocked a Saint punt at the Frostburg State 44 and senior linebacker Lathon Romaine (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) recovered the ball at the host 49.
The Bobcats moved the football down to the Thomas More 31, but on fourth-and-one, FSU turned the ball over with a fumble.
TMC was unble to capitalize on the turnover and was forced to punt after five plays and 17 yards. This time junior defensive end Gabe Ellis (Laurel, Del./Delmar) broke through the line and blocked the punt and recovered it at the Saint 48. However, the Bobcats would again squander the opportunity with their fourth fumble fo the game.
Junior running back Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) broke the century mark for the second time this season, carrying the ball 30 times for 119 yards.
The Bobcat defense was led by sophomore defensive lineman Collin Clifford (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), who registered 10 tackles. Ellis also had a fine afternoon, making eight stops including one sack, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble.
TMC’s Mark Carlisle led all players with 18 tackles, including one tackle for loss and one recovered fumble.
Frostburg State returns to action next Saturday, when it travels to Union (Ky.) at 1:30 pm.
