Baseball Drops a Non-Conference Game to Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Frostburg State baseball team lost to Washington & Jefferson 4-3 in a non-conference game Thursday evening at Ross Memorial Park.

The Presidents (20-10) opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ron Mitko hit a solo home run to right field. W&J added to its lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Chris Varacallo.

The Bobcats (23-11) took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) hit a three-run homer that scored sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point).

The Presidents pulled ahead again, 4-3, in the bottom of the eighth when Shaun Pfeil hit a two-run double.

Freshman Sean Rae (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall) tossed 7 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits striking out four, suffering his first loss of the season. President reliever Hank Marinaro pitched two hitless innings earning the win.

Williams led FSU with two hits and three RBI’s while Pfeil led the Presidents with one hit and two RBI’s including the game winner.

Frostburg State returns to action Saturday, April 30 when they host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
