Field Hockey Loses to Virginia Wesleyan in Overtime

Norfolk, VA — Sophomore Erica Boyce scored with 12:19 left in overtime giving host Virginia Wesleyan a 5-4 field hockey win over FSU Sunday afternoon.

The Marlins (5-3) started off the first half scoring three goals in four minutes. The first goal was from sophomore Holley Marchwicki off an assist from junior Cara Byrd in the 27th minute.

Marchwicki scored the second goal on a penalty stroke in the 30th minute. Just over a minute later freshman Ashley Traylor scored to give VWU a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Bobcats (1-6) answered back strong in the second half scoring four consecutive goals. The first came in the 46th minute from freshman forward Samantha Riley (Bethesda, Md./Chevy Chase) who scored unassisted.

Freshman Brittany Russell (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from junior Heidi Zook (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley). Five minutes later, sophomore Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) scored to tie the game at 3-3.

The Bobcats final goal came from Riley who deflected a pass from junior Tawni Buck (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) with 10 minutes left in the second half giving Frostburg State a 4-3 lead..

Virginia Wesleyan then tied the game when Marchwicki scored with 7:39 left in regulation.

Bobcat goalie Kristin Cousin (Edgewater, Md./South River) took the loss and had eight saves.

Frostburg State goes back on the road as they travel to St. Mary’s next Sunday at noon.
