FROSTBURG, MD — Senior
Karen Kotofski (Glen Burnie, Md./Northeast) scored twice to lead Frostburg State to a 2-1 win over visiting Grove City College in the season-opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon.
Kotofski, the reigning Allegheny Mountain College Conference Player of the Year, put the Bobcats on the board first when she converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
Grove City pulled even in the 34th minute when senior Michelle Novosel blasted a high arcing shot from 25 yards out over the outstretched arms of Bobcat sophomore goalie Meredith Remus (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air).
The teams went into halftime tied at one.
Kotofski then scored the game-winner in the 50th minute when she headed in a free kick from junior Beth Hlebasko (New Market, Md./Linganore).
FSU pressured throughout the game, outshooting the Wolverines 19-6, but came up empty on several scoring chances.
Sophomore Danielle Carter (Rockville, Md./Rockville) hit the crossbar in the game’s seventh minute, and a close-range header by Kotofski was snared by Grove City sophomore goalkeeper Kori Koper in the 29th minute.
Kotofski also hit the crossbar with a blast in the 55th minute.
Senior Kelly Jones (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) earned her first collegiate win after making a pair of saves and holding Grove City scoreless in the second half.
Remus played the first half and allowed one goal while making one save.
Frostburg State returns to action next Wednesday when it visits Johns Hopkins at 7:00 pm.
