FROSTBURG, MD — The Frostburg State women’s volleyball team swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg 3-0 Wednesday night to clinch the AMCC regular-season title for the third straight year.
The Bobcats improve to 26-5 overall and 8-0 in the AMCC while UPG falls to 4-19 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
In game one, Frostburg State got off to a slow start before taking a 15-9 lead on a kill by junior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northerntook). The Bobcats extended the cushion to14 at 26-12 before capturing the victory 30-16.
Junior Kristie Butt (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) recorded six straight service points in game two to give FSU a commanding 19-9 lead. Frostburg State continued to build its lead 25-12 before closing the match 30-15 behind two kills by senior Jodi Carpenter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore).
In game three, the Bobcats held a slight edge at 4-3 before senior Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) served nine straight winners to give FSU the 13-3 advantage. Butt added four more service points to help push the lead to 18-4. UPG came out of a timeout and scored five straight points but Frostburg State went on an 8-2 run to extend its lead to 26-11. Sophomore Kelly May (Flintstone, Md./Fort Hill) smashed a kill to seal the victory 30-14.
Carpenter led FSU with 12 kills followed by McDonald with 10. Senior Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and May tossed in eight kills a piece as well.
Sophomore Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and Ness had 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Senior defensive specialist Sam Seyfferth (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) posted 9 digs.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday when they host Lake Erie at 1:00 pm on Senior Day.
