Saunders Named CAC Co-Coach of the Year; Diggs Named Rookie of the Year

YORK, Pa. – Frostburg head women's basketball coach Carrie Saunders was named the "Bill Finney" CAC Co-Coach of the Year, while sophomore guard Victoria Diggs and senior forward Kirsten Rayner also garnered league honors.

Diggs was tabbed as the 2016-17 CAC Rookie of the Year and Rayner received All-CAC Second Team honors.

Saunders, now in her third season, will share the award with Christopher Newport head coach Bill Broderick. She guided the Bobcat women's team to 12 wins and a spot in the CAC Tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Saunders becomes the first Frostburg head coach to win Coach of the Year honors since the program joined the conference in 2010-11.

Diggs, who is a sophomore academically, was a critical piece to the Bobcats turnaround this season. She finished third on the team in scoring (11.3 PPG) and assists (2.2 APG). She scored in double figures 13 times, including seven times in the final eight games of the year.

Diggs notched a season-high 34 points on December 11 against Wesley, where she went 7-of-9 (77.8%) from three-point range, tying a single-game school record for threes made in a game.

Rayner, a two-year starter from Lonaconing, finishes her senior season sixth in the CAC in scoring average (13.4) and fifth in rebounding (7.9 RPG). She has made 45 starts over the past two seasons and has paced the Bobcats in both scoring and rebounding over that span.

Rayner, an exercise & sport science major, carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. The second-team award marks her first career all-star recognition.
