MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior
Sumer Rohrs (Frostburg, Md./Forest) began her quest for a school record sixth National Championship after qualifying first in the 400-meter hurdle trials at a sun drenched Dom Drumm Stadium on day one of the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Thursday afternoon.
Rohrs, who enters the championships tied for second in Frostburg State history with four National Titles, ran the fastest overall time of 60.72, setting this season’s best NCAA Division III time and breaking a stadium record which she previously held at 61.91.
Rachel Boerner of Calvin ran a 60.74 in the 400 hurdles in heat one, setting both the DIII best time and stadium record until Rohrs captured both honors a few minutes later in the second heat.
The 400-meter hurdle finals are scheduled for Saturday at 3:25 pm. Rohrs also will try for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles tomorrow afternoon at 3:20 pm.
Senior
Brian Leiter (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) qualified for the finals in the 1,500-meter run after crossing in third place in the first heat in 3:54.91. The 1,500 finals are set for Saturday afternoon at 1:20 pm.
Leiter will try for All-American status in the 800-meter run for the second-consecutive year as the trials start on Friday at 4:40 pm.
Sophomore
Emily Furr (Damascus, Md./Poolesville) will begin her first NCAA Outdoor Championship on Saturday morning when she competes in the first of her two events; the women’s triple jump at 11:30 am followed by the women’s high jump at 2:30 pm.
