Karla Schoenly is heading into her 20th year as a member of the Frostburg State athletic training staff in 2020-21.
Schoenly has served as the head athletic training for the last seven years and has worked directly with the nationally-ranked football program during that time.
During those seven years, Schoenly has also served as the CAC Sports Medicine Chair, served as the Maryland representative for the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainer Association Scholarship Committee and has assisted in Frostburg’s transition to NCAA Division II with updates regarding the policies and procedures of the athletic training room.
Prior to being named the head athletic trainer, Schoenly served as the associate athletic trainer starting in 2009. She worked with multiple teams, including both soccer teams, women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse.
Schoenly started at FSU in 2001 and was an assistant athletic trainer for the first seven years. She evaluated injuries and provided rehabilitation programs to student-athletes and won the Bobcat Backer award during that time for her tireless work in helping student-athletes.
Schoenly also worked closely with Frostburg’s athletic training major in academics. An approved clinical instructor, Schoenly developed approved clinical instructor course to certify staff athletic trainers and assisted athletic training education program director with CAATE compliance standards, revisions, data outcome, matrix updates and end-of-year reviews.
She managed ATrack an online documentation system for athletic training education department, she certified athletic training students in professional rescuer CPR/AED/First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen and helped develop athletic training student handbook.
Schoenly also taught several courses including Introduction to Athletic Training, Athletic Taping and Bracing techniques, Emergency Medical Techniques and Clinical Experiences in Athletic Training I – V.
Schoenly is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association and Maryland Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Aside from her work at Frostburg, Schoenly has also worked with Maryland Athletic Trainers Association Faculty Sponsor for Poster Presentation: Von Willebrand’s Disease in a collegiate Men’s Lacrosse Player: A case report, served as a presenter on a Course for Coaches on Concussions at Allegany College of Maryland and was a presenter at a Concussion Seminar for Allegany and Garrett High School athletic staff
Schoenly graduated from Frostburg State with both her bachelors (1999) and masters (2001) degrees.
