At the high school level, Davis coached two individual state champions, 12 state place winners, four all-Americans, and two individual national champions.
From 2007-2015, Davis spent eight seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II power and MEC rival West Liberty. Under Davis’ guidance, the Hilltoppers were a top 20 fixture in the national rankings year over year. At West Liberty, Davis produced one individual national champion, two individual national runner-ups and ten Division II All-Americans. In addition, he coached 37 wrestlers who would go on to become NWCA Academic All-Americans.
Davis is a native of Frostburg. As a competitor, he led then-Beall (now Mountain Ridge) to three team Maryrland state titles by winning two individual state titles and finishing as a runner-up his sophomore season. After graduating from high school, he served six years in the United States Marine Corps and is a Gulf War veteran. He was also a member of the All-Marine wrestling team in 1988 and 1989, qualifying for the Olympic Trials in Greco-Roman Wrestling in ’88.
After completing his tour of duty with the Marine Corps, Davis enrolled at West Liberty. At WLU, as a member of the wrestling team, he became West Liberty’s first four-time All-American. He placed in the top three of the 177-pound weight class at the national championships in each of his four seasons, claiming a national title in 1994. In 1995, Davis’ senior season, the Hilltoppers finished in second-place at the national tournament. Davis completed his wrestling career at WLU with a 99-17-1 record.
