Jan Burton

Assistant Coach Jan Burton is heading into her 7th consecutive season in an official role with the Bobcats for the 2024-25 season, having been involved with the program since 2012.

Growing up as an age group swimmer in Raleigh, NC before moving to Frostburg nearly 30 years ago, Burton has always had a love for the sport of swimming. Primarily working with the distance group, she oversaw the daily training of a group that rewrote 5 of the 6 distance records in 2024 and holds 33/60 of the top 10 times in program history. Her passion for distance swimming extends far beyond the pool deck, as she trains for and competes in various marathon swims and is currently 2/3 toward completion of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming (English Channel, Catalina Channel, Swim Around Manhattan). Burton completed the 45.9km Manhattan swim on June 1, 2019, in a time of 8 hours, 15 minutes and 11 seconds. On August 14, 2024, she successfully crossed the 33km English Channel in a time of 12 hours and 32 minutes.

Burton graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Chemistry, and earned her master’s degree in Chemistry from Penn State University.
