A walk through the hallways of the Cordts Center brings a visitor face to face with the symbols of the rich tradition of Frostburg State University track and field – the over 275 All-American certificates earned in addition to plaques that honor the three national championships won by the Bobcats.
Perhaps like you, I was a recent visitor to FSU, I was so impressed that I chose to become head coach a little over one year ago. Our goals are to not only continue the great tradition but to also increase our squad size by increasing our depth in all event areas. We made great progress in attaining our goals last year, increasing squad size and placing individuals in all event areas. Sumer Rohrs won National Championships in the 55 meter and 100 meter high hurdles and runner-up honors in the 400 meter low hurdles. Brian Leiter joined Rohrs as an All-American by placing in the 800 meter run.
Frostburg State University, an NCAA Division III institution, places the “highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience.” I like to say with great emphasis, the word “student” comes first in the term, “student-athlete”. Our women’s track and field team exemplified that mantra in 2007-08 by being named an All-Academic team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Brian Leiter and Sumer Rohrs also added individual All-Academic honors to their All-American honors.
In closing, let me summarize our focus by paraphrasing a famous coach – we will relentlessly pursue perfection, in the classroom, and on the athletic fields, knowing full well that we will never achieve it. But in relentlessly pursuing that goal we will attain excellence. If you have similar goals in life, we welcome and encourage you to join the rich tradition of Frostburg State University track and field.
