Greetings from beautiful Western Maryland and Frostburg State University!
My name is Stuart Swink and I am the men's and women's tennis coach here for the Bobcats. I want to thank you for your interest in our school and our tennis program and tell you a little about Frostburg State and my personal philosophy of coaching.
Frostburg State competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, which encompasses our school and five northern and western Pennsylvania schools. Our women's schedule is played in the fall, while our men compete in the spring. Both teams hold organized practices during their off-seasons and participate in several tournaments, most notably the Rolex and ITA Championships.
We typically play between 15 and 20 regular-season matches during our "in season," culminated with the AMCC Tournament and possible NCAA Tournament berth.
The school itself is nestled in the hills of Western Maryland, in the middle of some of the best recreational opportunities in the East. There are three major ski resorts within an hour of campus and some of the top mountain biking and white water rafting anywhere.
Our student population is currently around 5,100, although almost 90 percent of our classes have 30 students or less. This makes for the perfect blend of academic variety and opportunity, with the added benefit of personal attention and accountability. Over 85 percent of our almost 400 faculty members hold terminal or doctorate degrees, and we offer over 40 choices in degree studies.
My coaching philosophy is now and has always been athletes first, winning second. I believe my job as a coach is to provide an atmosphere underwritten by the real reason you're in college -- to get an education and have a positive college experience. I like to enclose this philosophy with the most important reason I coach the sport, and I hope the reason you're considering coming to Frostburg State to play - I like to have fun.
This philosophy has been the basis for whatever success I've had as a player and coach, and it will continue to keep me loving the sport - something I hope to pass on to you.
Free free to contact me by phone or e-mail, and please visit our web site for more information and links to both athletics and information about Frostburg State. I would also enjoy a video either of your playing or simply discussing your goals and expectations of your college experience.
I look forward to our next conversation.
Sincerely,
Stuart Swink
