WINGATE, N.C. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team picked up their first win of the season with a 3-0 road victory over Wingate Saturday morning.
It took 10 minutes for either side to generate a shot, with the opening parts of the game plagued by fouls from both sides. FSU was awarded a penalty corner, which the Bulldogs initially defended, however the ball found its way back into the arc, where freshman Izzy Gibbons was able to find senior Morgan Sparks in front of goal to finish home. That would end up being the only effort of the period, taking the game into the second.
Frostburg began to take control early in the next frame, as sophomores Kenzie Cummins and Ava Shorkey both drew saves from Colleen Emanuele in goal. After the sides traded corners, Shorkey had a shot go wide while sophomore Caroline Earnshaw's effort was blocked in front of goal. Headed to the final seven minutes, Shorkey again was the threat with a shot blocked, as did junior Taylor Korczynski. With just over a minute to play in the half, the Bobcats went on a breakaway, where Earnshaw passed into the arc for Gibbons, who fired inside the left post for a 2-0 advantage.
There would be no let up in the FSU attack coming out of the break, as senior Mikyla Rineer drew a save from new goaltender Ava Fasolo, with the rebound falling to Earnshaw to tap home the third of the day. Wingate was finally able to put together some offense four minutes later, seeing a trio of shots stopped by Frostburg's defense but unable to get anything on target by the end of the period.
WU came out quicker in the fourth frame, having another shot blocked before freshman Jenna Yazzetti was called into action for the first time with a save after five minutes. At the other end, sophomore Makenna Buffington was denied by Fasolo before the Bulldogs made their way back up the field. Yazzetti shut down back-to-back chances, while another shot was blocked before reaching her. With two and a half minutes remaining and looking for a consolation goal, Leyre Campo was again thwarted by Yazzetti, who held on to her first collegiate shutout with the 3-0 victory.
Frostburg held a 13-9 advantage in shots, with nine on target to the hosts' four.
With the win, FSU improves to 1-1 on the year, while Wingate drops to 0-2. The Bobcats have a quick turnaround as they remain on the road to face Coker on Sunday, September 6 at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
