GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team had three different goalscorers in their road shutout victory over Glenville State on Wednesday evening.
FSU began the game on the front foot, creating the first three chances with juniors Madison Hobson and Cassidy Paige sending efforts wide, while senior Madison Hinton sent one over the bar. Continuing to keep up the pressure, Paige was played through on goal with a mix-up at the back before being brought down just inside the 18 for a penalty kick. Junior Ridgely Houck stepped up and calmly finished into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead after 15 and a half minutes.
GSU looked for a quick response, earning a free kick four minutes later, where senior Mia Graff did well to dive to her right and hold onto the effort to prevent any follow-up chance. Three minutes later on a counter-attack, Paige again used her pace to take advantage of a defensive mistake but put her shot directly at Lucia Lopez in goal. Frostburg then had a trio of chances in quick succession, with junior Mollie Rebuck seeing a shot blocked, then classmate Ana Davis had a deep drive right at Lopez and freshman Kelly Dougherty sent an effort high and wide.
After Dougherty put another shot over the bar, the Pioneers had an excellent chance to equalize with just over eight minutes left until the half, as Isabella Cuellar-Gonzalez was played through for a one-on-one chance but put her shot right onto the foot of Graff for a kick save to preserve the lead. Glenville had the final effort of the half blocked before reaching Graff to get to the break at 1-0.
Davis had the first chance coming into the second half after three minutes, hitting a shot just outside the 18 that would have went just wide of the post and was gathered by Lopez. Through the next seven minutes, the sides traded chances back-and-forth, as Graff palmed away a cross-turned-shot, then Rebuck attempted a volley that lacked the pace to trouble Lopez, and finally Valentina Quiroz sent a shot well wide of the mark for the hosts.
Neither side generated much for the next 15 minutes, with Graff making an easy save on a flick-on at the near post. Just over 60 seconds later, Hobson played a nice one-two with Paige to get free down the right wing, as her ball into the box was parried by Lopez right to Rebuck for an easy finish and a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers had a pair of chances in the next three minutes but both were straight at Graff and easily gathered by her.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes, the ball got bounced around after a throw-in, eventually landing for Hinton to send a clever flick over top to Dougherty, whose cross found Davis to chest down and pass into the path of sophomore Reese Rizzo to sweep home a volley as the third score of the night. GSU sent one late effort wide and another directly at Graff before the buzzer sounded for the 3-0 shutout victory.
The Bobcats held a 13-10 advantage in shots, with both teams putting seven on goal, as Graff earned her third clean sheet of the year.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 5-2-1 on the year while Glenville drops to 4-4-0. FSU will return home on Sunday, September 27 to face Charleston (WV) at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
