Price Nets Goal, Yazzetti Has Career Day in Net in Field Hockey Loss to #2 Raiders

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey Team fell 4-1 to No. 2 Shippensburg at home on Wednesday.

The Raiders started with momentum in the first quarter, generating a penalty corner that led to their first goal of the day within the first minute, as Elaina Fragassi passed in front to Emily Bitters. Both teams locked in defensively for the next six minutes until SU fired off three shots, with freshman keeper Jenna Yazzetti smothering two and another going wide. Keeping up the pressure, Shippensburg earned another corner and once again found the back of the net through Fragassi for a 2-0 lead. In the remaining five minutes of the period, the Raiders got off another trio of chances, with Yazzetti stopping one, the next going high, and the last one being blocked to end the quarter.

To start the second, FSU generated their first real look on offense, as sophomore Caroline Earnshaw tipped a shot wide of the goal after three minutes. After that chance, SU found their groove again, as Fragassi was denied by Yazzetti, however Anne Gardner went on a solo run down the baseline, eventually getting into the circle and putting home the visitors' third goal. The Raiders kept much of the possession in searching for another goal, however Yazzetti was up to the task again. Frostburg then enjoyed a short spell offensively, earning a pair of corners, as on the latter, freshman Izzy Gibbons nearly deflected a shot out of the air to goal but sent it just high. Shippensburg would have the final effort of the half being blocked, heading into the break up 3-0.

FSU began the third quarter with a quick shot inside the first 30 seconds from senior Mikyla Rineer, testing Liv Schweighart for the first time of the day. Moving quickly up the field, Shippensburg immediately responded off a corner, with a shot saved by Yazzetti that fell right to Gardner on the back post for a 4-0 advantage. Despite two penalty corners after the goal, Yazzetti once again held with a save two minutes later. In the last 10 minutes of the frame, neither side had much going offensively, with the Raiders putting one effort high and another parried away by Yazzetti, taking things into the fourth.

In the opening three minutes of the quarter, the Raiders generated three chances with Yazzetti stopping a pair of efforts and being helped out on a defensive save by freshman Alayna Enoff. Looking to get something out of the contest, Rineer tried another shot that went right at new SU goalkeeper Grace Meinke. Shippensburg then got full control over a two-minute span, creating six chances, however Yazzetti was a brick wall, swatting away five efforts before the last one finally went wide of net. In the final three minutes, Rineer had a shot saved off a corner, then in the follow-up, sophomore Makenna Buffington found senior Emma Price at the back post for FSU's first goal of the night, making the score 4-1. That would end up being the final, as neither side managed a shot in the last moments, giving the Raiders their three-goal win.

SU held a 26-6 advantage in shots, with 20 on goal compared to four, as Yazzetti set a new career high with 15 saves in goal.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 3-4 as Shippensburg improves to 4-1 on the year. FSU is back in action on Saturday, September 26, as they hit the road to face No. 7 Indiana (Pa.) at 11 AM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
