FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell 2-0 against No. 3 Newberry at home on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves started the game with two early shots between a corner, both of which were saved by freshman goalkeeper Jenna Yazzetti. NC kept pressure largely in their offensive half, stringing together four chances in a thirty-second span, three of which Yazzetti smothered and another that was cleared off the line by junior Piper Taylor. After five minutes had passed, Newberry was finally able to get one past the line to go up 1-0. Neither side generated much offense until the 11-minute mark, when the Wolves shot wide before Frostburg made their way up-field to earn a penalty corner, but no shot came before the frame ended. 

NC looked to continue their pressure at the start of the second, with their first effort going just wide before the Bobcats had an excellent chance to equalize, as sophomore Ava Shorkey lined a shot right at keeper Kensley Harris. Three minutes later, the Wolves netted their second goal off the stick of Parker Keeler after being found by Elise Santhagen. Both defenses were effective for the majority of the quarter, with the only action being a penalty corner for each side until the final four minutes of the half. Newberry looked to add their third with a period of dominance, firing a trio of shots at Yazzetti who was a wall in goal. After another effort was blocked, FSU ended the half with a chance from freshman Alayna Enoff on a corner, who was denied by Harris.

Early on in the third, the Wolves fended off a Bobcat penalty corner before making their way up on attack, with one shot saved by Yazzetti and the follow-up missing high. With some renewed energy, FSU earned a couple of corners led to a pair of chances for senior Sofia Boyle, who saw her first effort saved and the next blocked in front of goal. Three minutes passed before NC had their own chance off a corner, but Yazzetti parried it away. Frostburg couldn't make the most of another corner, as the Wolves put a shot wide and another into Yazzetti to head into the fourth still up 2-0.

NC continued their early quarter momentum with a shot at Yazzetti in the first two minutes before the Bobcats kicked themselves into gear. After working the ball wide, the ball found its way to sophomore Sabrina Maldonado, who put a shot wide before being denied by new keeper Cayla Wiggins off a corner. Back at the other end, two more corners led to another pair of shots from Newberry, with a combination of Yazzetti and the FSU defense keeping them off the board. Searching for some late magic, Frostburg earned a trio of corners with four minutes to go, but the only shot came from Boyle that got blocked. Each side managed one more shot in the remaining three minutes, as Yazzetti was called into action while senior Mikyla Rineer got her first chance of the day but was stopped by Wiggins, as the Wolves held onto their 2-0 advantage for the win. 

NC held a 24-8 edge in shots, with 18 of them being on goal compared to Frostburg's five.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 2-3 on the year while Newberry improves to 2-1. FSU is back in action at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday, September 19, as they face Converse at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
