Bullpen Shuts Down #19 Griffins Offense in Baseball Road Upset

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Baseball team won 3-2 against No. 19 Seton Hill on Wednesday evening after an electric road battle.

The game started on the right foot for the Bobcats, as freshman Tanner Cunningham drew a four-pitch walk with sophomore Manny Hall following with a double before junior Jackson Schalick was a hit by a pitch to load the bases. No runs would come across, however, as the Griffins generated a line-out and a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the frame, SHU worked a lead-off single, with the runner taking the next two bags on a steal and an error, eventually scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0.

Back-to-back strikeouts looked to make a quick Bobcat offensive second, though redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael worked a knock up the middle and stole second, however he would be stranded following another K. SHU looked to add more in their trip to the plate, as they plated three straight one-out singles to bring a run around, bringing their lead to 2-0. Freshman Drew Jourdan helped ensure they wouldn't add anymore on the board, making a great defensive play to field a pop-up bunt and firing to first for an inning-ending double play.

In the top of the third, Frostburg finally was able to take advantage of their baserunners after Cunningham singled up the middle before Hall doubled down the right field line, putting both in scoring position. After back-to-back outs, Jourdan stepped up to the plate and roped a single to center, scoring Cunningham and Hall to tie the game at 2-2.
Freshman Bryce Bauer came out of the bullpen in the third and able to take Seton Hill down 1-2-3, followed by a quiet inning from both offenses after junior Branden Brown threw a scoreless fourth with a pair of strikeouts.

The Bobcats threatened in the top of the fifth, looking to take the lead, as Hall singled to the left side and another pitch plunked Schalick before a senior Jake Holler walk loaded the bases. Once again, the the Griffins' pitching got out of the inning with a pop fly to short and a swinging K, keeping the game tied. In the bottom of the frame, junior John Smith was sent to toe the rubber, working through the SHU offense despite a two-out single and stolen base, getting an inning ending strikeout looking. After a pitching change from Seton Hill, junior Ryan Bouma led the sixth off with scorching a double to left center before an error allowed Carmichael to reach base and Bouma to move to third. Junior Konner Pittman came into pinch hit and was able to put the ball in play, grounding into a double play that scored Bouma from third for a 3-2 lead.

Continuing to rely on the bullpen, graduate Ty Morris came in for relief in the bottom half, working a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of K's. With FSU going down in order during the next two frames, Morris matched on the mound, not allowing a single baserunner, with the help of a spectacular diving catch from Schalick in left field during the bottom of the eighth. With the Bobcats unable to add any insurance runs, junior Joey Serafin was handed the ball and entrusted to keep the Griffin batters at bay. He allowed a lead-off single before junior Logan Helser made a great snag at first to get the lead runner, however SHU kept the fans on the edge of their seats with back-to-back singles to left to put the bases full with just one out. Calming things down, Serafin tossed a three-pitch strikeout before a battle against the next batter, getting up 0-2 before being brought back to a full count. With the seventh pitch of the at-bat, Serafin was able to get a strikeout looking to seal the 3-2 upset.

Hall led the offense for the Bobcats with three hits, as Bouma was right behind with two, while Jourdan tallied a pair of RBIs on the day. FSU's five pitchers out of the bullpen combined for seven innings of shutout ball, allowing four combined hits and just one walk while striking out eight.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 24-6, extending its win streak to 17 games, while SHU drops to 25-7. The Bobcats are back on the road this weekend as they face Wheeling for a four-game series beginning Saturday, April 11 at 3 PM from EQT Park in Washington, Pa.
