FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team secured the Mountain East Conference Tournament No. 1 seed in defeating Davis & Elkins 20-4 at home on Wednesday evening.
Â
D&E took the opening draw but immediately coughed the ball up due to sophomore Kam Lee, as freshman Avery O'Hara passed inside to senior Sydney Stone to get the scoring started. After another Senators turnover, FSU's offense began to click, netting three goals in 90 seconds. Senior Emily Lamoreaux and freshman Delaney Burrows netted back-to-back solo efforts, then junior Gianna Leonardi fed senior Neila Haney for a 4-0 lead after six minutes. With the sides trading turnovers, O'Hara went on another solo run to push the advantage out to five.
Â
The Bobcats continued to dominate the shot count, putting a pair of efforts wide while another was saved in goal, as a failed Davis & Elkins clear resulted in Lamoreaux picking up the loose ball and quickly getting it up-field to Haney to fire home. In the final five minutes, D&E was whistled for a couple penalties, as Stone and Burrows each netted a woman-up goal, while Haney capped off the nine-goal frame with a score of her own making.
Â
With another Senators turnover beginning the second period, senior Daniella Boss weaved her way through the defense to get to a running clock at 10-0. Davis & Elkins got their first shots on the board following a Frostburg turnover but put both wide, as senior Izzy Kelly caused a turnover that led to another card. Haney passed to O'Hara to take advantage, then the pair connected again after a Burrows score to lead 13-0. In the final four minutes, D&E put themselves on the board from a narrow angle, then despite caused turnovers from Lamoreaux and Burrows, the visitors netted the final goal of the half to go into the break at 13-2.
Â
FSU quickly settled themselves from the late Senator momentum, as Burrows put home her fourth of the day while senior Sara Weingarden caused a turnover that led to freshman Maddie Russell finding Lamoreaux for a 13-goal advantage. D&E was then denied by the post while freshman Lauren Kunes and Haney had CT's, however a green card allowed the visitors to get their third goal of the day. Over the next three minutes, Burrows and Haney were both denied on efforts before the latter was assisted by O'Hara to break a seven-minute goal drought. On another Bobcat penalty, sophomore Sophie Anderson did well to get her stick in the way of a pass and hold off the disadvantage, while sophomore Liz Amos made a great save on a free position before stopping another last-second shot to lead 16-3 headed to the fourth.
Â
Through the first three minutes of the final period, FSU was denied on back-to-back chances before Kelly caused a turnover that served as her setting a new career record for the program. At the other end, Lamoreaux passed to Kunes while shortly after, Kelly picked up an assist to Haney to grow the lead to 15. As Davis & Elkins' offense continued to turn the ball over, thanks to Kelly and Haney, the latter found sophomore Julia Bannister cutting to goal, who in turn got freshman Chloe Zeruto on the score sheet for a 20-3 advantage. The sides traded several turnovers in the final four minutes, as the Senators put in the final goal before the horn sounded for the 20-4 final.
Â
Haney led all scorers on eight total points with five goals and three assists, while O'Hara and Burrows combined for seven goals between the pair. Kelly drove the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs, as Haney and Weingarden tacked on three CT's apiece.
Â
With the win, Frostburg concludes their regular season at 14-3, sharing the MEC Regular Season Championship with Charleston (WV), as Davis & Elkins drops to 11-7. Both teams now advance to the conference tournament, where FSU will host the winner of D&E and Wheeling as the No. 1 seed on Thursday, April 30 at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
