Marinello Sparks Softball to Game One Victory in Road Split with Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team earned a Sunday split on the road against Glenville State, taking game one 10-8 before losing game two 2-1.

Senior Gracie Nelson led off the first contest with a single up the middle but would advance no further, with a fielder's choice, pop fly, and strikeout ended the frame. GSU waste little time in getting on the board, as the first three batters were each walked before a double, RBI groundout, and error plated four runs for the hosts.

Both sides went fairly quietly in the second, as the Bobcats found their offense in the third. Freshman Sammy Magee punched a double into left-center, then sophomore Bri Russo reached on an infield single that saw the ball thrown away, putting each runner in scoring position. Senior Arden Miller then hit a soft ball to second that she sprinted to first on while classmate Olivia Stetler had an RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half. Junior Kylee Piconi kept the rally going with a walk before senior Ally Myers ripped a ball into center to pull all the way within 4-3.

With the teams going down in order during their next at-bats, the Pioneers got some two-out magic in the fourth, using a pair of singles either side of a walk to add an insurance run at 5-3. Miller roped a double into the gap in left-center with one out in the fifth, however wouldn't advance after a pair of liners were caught in the field. Continuing to give her team a chance in the circle, sophomore Izabella Donaldson worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to bring the bats back up in the sixth.

Sophomore Sage Haller led off by legging out a double to right, as the tag would have gotten her out but the ball dropped out of the fielder's glove. Graduate pinch hitter Laura Gilford then beat out an infield hit and Magee reached on an error to bring Haller home. Russo stepped in and brought in both runners, blasting a double to left-center to give FSU their first lead at 6-5. After a fly ball caught in right, Stetler powered a ball off the top of the center field wall for a two-run shot that put Frostburg up 8-5 to cap their five-run inning.

Glenville wouldn't be deterred, as their hitters got going with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Freshman Izzy Dietrich came on in relief and looked to limit the damage, as a groundout scored a run before she worked another to Haller, however a two-run homer tied things at 8-8. Dietrich fielded the final out by making a great reaction catch on a lined ball right back at her.

The Bobcats picked her back up in the seventh, as Haller worked a one-out walk before sophomore Zoey Marinello picked a great time to hit her second career home run, sending the ball into left-center to regain the lead 10-8. Looking to close things out, Dietrich got back-to-back batters to ground out to Haller, however the Pioneers had their hopes kept alive on a throwing error and wild pitch. Dietrich settled in, getting the last batter to strike out swinging and sealing the two-run victory.

Russo and Miller led the offense with four combined hits and three runs between the pair, while Marinello and Stetler combined to drive in five RBI.

With the offensive firepower in game one, the second game was the near-complete opposite, as neither team scored a run for the first two frames. Frostburg threatened in the first as Russo drew a walk and Miller singled up the middle before a strikeout and groundout put the side away. GSU tried to do the same in the second, as a single, error, and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs before Dietrich got a routine grounder to Piconi to step on third.

As they had done in the first game, the Pioneers did their damage with two outs in the third, as a hit by pitch was followed by a double just inside third and an error to take a 2-0 lead. FSU didn't manage to do much until the top of the fifth, as Magee and Nelson worked back-to-back two-out singles but were unable to come around to score.

The Bobcats were given another chance in the sixth, as Miller worked an infield single while Stetler reached on a fielder's choice and was replaced on the bases by freshman Ryann Durnall, who stole second. Myers ripped a ball through the middle to get FSU within 2-1, but despite a Haller walk, couldn't tie or take the lead. Dietrich kept Glenville off the board in the bottom half, however Frostburg wasn't able to get a baserunner on in the seventh, giving the Pioneers the split on the day.

Miller netted a pair of hits while Myers drove in the lone FSU run, as Dietrich tossed six innings allowing two runs, only one of them being earned.

With the result, Frostburg now sits at 32-6 on the year, while Glenville moves to 30-12. The Bobcats will return home to face Fairmont State on Wednesday, April 22 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
