Bauer's Strong Start Helps Baseball to Sunday Split with Pioneers

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State Baseball split their Sunday doubleheader against Point Park, falling 8-1 in game one and winning 13-1 in game two.

In the top of the first, after back-to-back strikeouts, junior Jackson Schalick blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. That advantage was short-lived, as two walks in between a groundout and a single up the middle brought in the Pioneers' first run of the game. They added another on a fielder's choice, as a walk, RBI single, and wild pitch plated three more for a 5-1 score.

Both offenses were quiet through the next three innings, as graduate Ty Morris came in as a reliever and kept Point Park off the board until the bottom of the fifth. The long ball struck again to make the score to 6-1, as Frostburg wasn't able to get their bats going. The Pioneers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as a walk was followed by another homer to left, taking the lead up to 8-1. Point Park was able to work a quick seventh inning, with freshman Landon Marple the only hit to give the hosts the seven-run victory.

After having been quiet all weekend, the Bobcat offense woke up immediately in game two, as freshman Tanner Cunningham worked a full count walk to lead things off before advancing to third on a failed pick off attempt. A batter later, junior Ryan Bouma walked before senior Jake Holler lined a double down the left field line to score Cunningham and Bouma for a 2-0 Frostburg lead. With his offense already giving him some cushion, freshman starter Bryce Bauer had no trouble handling the top of the Pioneers' lineup as he got the first two batters to line out before catching the last one looking.

In the second inning, the Bobcats picked up right where they left off, as Marple beat out an infield single before moving to second on a throwing error and third on a redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael sacrifice bunt. Freshman Mason Kelleher then got knocked by a pitch before Cunningham laid down a beautiful bunt for a hit that scored Marple to add another run for FSU. After freshman Drew Jourdan walked to load the bases, Schalick sent a missile over the centerfielder's head to clear the bases on a double and increase Frostburg's lead to 6-0.

Bauer found a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the frame, allowing a lead-off double and a one-out single, but he was able to work his way out of the jam with a pop-up and a grounder to Carmichael to keep the score right where it was. After a quiet inning from the Bobcats, PPU's offense broke into the score column, as two lead-off hits led to a sac fly scoring one; however, that's all Bauer would allow as he caught the last batter looking.

The fourth inning only brought more success for FSU's offense, as after two quick outs, Jourdan and Schalick hit back-to-back singles before Bouma sent one into the left-center gap to send both runners home. Holler followed reaching base via an error before Helser singled to center to bring Bouma home, then a Carmichael single brought home Helser, and the final run of the inning came in on a wild pitch, ballooning Frostburg's lead to 12-1.

In the bottom of the frame, Bauer pitched another 1-2-3 inning before a quiet fifth and sixth innings from both offenses. The Bobcats looked to add more in the top of the seventh as freshman Sam Heckert singled before a fielder's choice from sophomore Manny Hall and freshman Anthony Savino singled to left. Another pinch hitter for FSU, freshman Will Mollman, hit a deep fly ball to left center for a double that scored Hall to make it a 13-1 score, as the weather halted PPU's last at-bats to make the game final.

Schalick led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, as Marple also recorded two hits and an RBI while Bouma and Holler each drove in a pair. Bauer went six complete innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven and surrendering no walks.

With the split, FSU's record moves to 27-13 as Point Park goes to 25-13. Frostburg is back on the road for a midweek game on Tuesday, April 21, as they face Shepherd at Meritus Park in Hagerstown, MD at 7 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
