Game Recap: Baseball |

Cardinals Pitching Leads to Sweep of Baseball

WASHINGTON, Pa. The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Wheeling by scores of 3-2 and 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Tanner Cunningham brought his success from the previous day's games, as he led off game one with a single, however would be stranded after the Cardinals were able to get the next three batters. The Bobcats sent sophomore Hunter Layhew to the mound, who was able to make quick work of the WU offense, generating two pop flies and a line out. In the bottom of the second, FSU got some two-out momentum as junior Logan Helser doubled to left, followed by sophomore Sam Atkinson getting plunked by a pitch, however neither was able to come across. Wheeling found their own success in the bottom of the frame as three singles were able to bring around a run for a 1-0 lead. After the top of the third passed with little action despite Cunningham reaching base and stealing second, the Cardinals looked to add more as a walk and a single put two runners on, then a stolen base allowed for both to score on a Luke Meyer double to left field, extending WU's lead to three.

The fourth inning went by without much offense from either side, despite both teams having runners on base, as Frostburg brought in sophomore Kamden Sowers for Layhew. The fifth went by just as quickly, with both sides going down 1-2-3. After junior Jackson Schalick and senior Jake Holler reached base, it looked like the Bobcats were going to break through to Wheeling's pitching, but after a couple of fly balls and a grounder, FSU went down without any runs.

Sowers was able to keep the Cardinals' offense quiet in the sixth to keep the score right where it was heading into the top of the seventh. Redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael hit a one-out single to left before moving up to second on a passed ball and finding his way to third after Cunningham reached on an error, then an RBI groundout from sophomore Manny Hall put Frostburg on the board. They were able to push another across as Schalick singled to left, which brought Cunningham in, however the comeback would fall just short as WU got the last batter on a looking K to secure the 3-2 victory.

Cunningham, Jourdan, Helser, Carmichael, and Schalick all recorded a hit, with the latter adding an RBI, along with Hall.

The first inning of game two went by quietly as the Bobcats sent out freshman Bryce Bauer to start, then in the second, Holler got a hold of a pitch and rocketed it over the left field fence, giving FSU their first lead of the day. One run seemed to be enough for Bauer as he was able to set down the Cardinals' batters with ease, and Frostburg threatened to add more, getting runners on base via free passes and a hit from Cunningham, but could never cash in on runners in scoring position. Bauer went on to set down the side in order in the third, fourth, and fifth before, in the sixth inning, he found himself in some trouble.

WU hit three straight singles to tie the game before junior Joey Serafin came out of the bullpen to try to limit the damage. After getting a first-pitch popup, Meyer doubled in the left-center gap, bringing two runs home and giving Wheeling a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, after Carmichael reached on an error, the Cardinals turned a 4-6-3 double play to clear the bases. That didn't stop junior Konner Pittman, who came into pinch hit, working a full count walk before being pinch run for by redshirt junior Tiernan Daly. After working a ten pitch at bat, Cunningham put a single into left field and got Daly to third, however on the next batter, WU generated a pop-up to short to secure the 3-1 victory and sweep.

With the two losses, FSU falls to 26-9 as Wheeling improves to 27-9. The Bobcats will return home to face Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday, April 15, at 3 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
