Burrows, Leonardi, Boss Have Career Days in Women's Lacrosse Defeat of UC

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team moved to 2-0 in MEC play with a 20-11 home victory over Charleston (WV) on Thursday afternoon.

Both goalkeepers were called into action early on, with sophomore Liz Amos and Megan Liston traded saves, the latter also putting back-to-back stops together that allowed her team to score the first goal. UC kept up their pressure, taking the next draw in for a score, then again after a Bobcat turnover and two penalties, putting up a 3-0 lead after six minutes. Liston kept FSU out again on a stop but then coughed the ball up to freshman Delaney Burrows, who was able to fire into an empty net to get Frostburg on the board.

The Golden Eagles were then denied by the post, as Burrows found senior Daniella Boss inside for a goal, followed just 20 seconds later by junior Gianna Leonardi passing to senior Sydney Stone to suddenly tie things at 3-3. Charleston took the lead back with a woman-up goal and looked to score again, however turned the ball over on the clear, allowing senior Neila Haney to net a solo effort. In the final three minutes, Boss shot wide on a pair of occasions, while Amos kept UC out at the other end, taking the game into the second frame at 4-4.

Within the first five minutes of the next period, Haney turned provider to Leonardi, then junior Maya Mosslih and Amos each caused a turnover, allowing Burrows to go on a weaving run to fire home a 6-4 advantage. Despite Liston making another save, Haney picked up a CT that eventually led to Boss scoring from the 8-meter and pushing the lead up to three. The next three minutes were controlled by the Golden Eagles, as they got themselves going by taking the draw and scoring within 30 seconds, then Amos was forced into a trio of saves in hopes of keeping them out, however she finally was beaten on the fourth effort for a 7-6 score.

A yellow card given against UC allowed the Bobcats to regain some control, as Boss put home another free position before Mosslih caused a turnover that led to Burrows finding Leonardi for a three-goal lead. Charleston would have the final say of the half, using an individual run through the FSU defense to cut within 9-7 heading into the break.

Continuing their late momentum into the third period, the Golden Eagles needed less than two minutes to even the score, putting home back-to-back solo goals. Seeking to respond, Haney caused a turnover on the clear that was picked up by Burrows, who got fouled and put Charleston a woman down. Within the minute, Boss put home her third free position of the day, while Amos made a great save to keep UC out, then Burrows scored off the 8-meter to go up 11-9.

Frostburg's defense stepped up over the next four minutes, as Mosslih and senior Izzy Kelly each caused a turnover while Amos made another stop, holding off a two-minute penalty in the process. As FSU got to even numbers, Burrows saw her shot bounce of Liston and get picked up by Boss, who fired home to go back up by three. Out of a pair of Golden Eagle penalties, the Bobcats pushed to their largest lead so far at 13-9 with Burrows passing to freshman Avery O'Hara for her first of the day. With just over a minute left in the quarter, Leonardi went on a solo run, getting to her favored left side and firing between Liston's legs to take a five-goal lead into the fourth.

Hoping for a way back into the game, Charleston got what they needed within the first 15 seconds, putting in a goal to get within four, however FSU effectively put the game away over the next five minutes. Haney and Leonardi went for back-to-back goals either side of a Golden Eagle turnover, then junior Kelly Johnson earned a draw control, leading to Haney finding a cutting Burrows to go up 17-10.

Burrows continued to pop up all over the field, causing a turnover, as did Mosslih, with the former putting home her fifth of the day on a free position. Two consecutive Frostburg penalties allowed UC to get a goal back, but Amos made a save followed by a CT to hold the visitors at bay. On a breakaway, Burrows sprinted up-field and put a shot past Liston, then Stone was found by freshman Chloe Zeruto on the doorstep to cap the scoring at 20-11.

In a career performance, Burrows netted nine total points on six goals and three assists, with Boss (5) and Leonardi (3) each also recording personal bests in scoring. Mosslih drove the defense with six caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs, while Amos had two and three, respectively, making eight total saves in net.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-2 on the year, while Charleston drops to 5-5. FSU will be back at home on Sunday, March 29 to face West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
