FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team took another pair of MEC victories on Sunday, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 8-5 and 13-3 while already surpassing their 2025 win total in the process.
Â
Game one began with FSU going down in order, while freshman Sammy Magee took the circle and ran into some early trouble. Following a lead-off walk, an error put runners at the corners for WVWC, while an RBI single brought in the game's first run. After another pair of walks, Magee got a foul out to first and a pop up to short to end the frame allowing just the one score. Frostburg picked up their first hit off the bat of sophomore Izabella Donaldson on a two-out single, but she advanced no further after a fly out.
Â
Wesleyan again was able to load the bases in the second, using a pair of walks either side of a single to threaten, however sophomore Sage Haller snagged a line drive and fired to third to complete the inning-ending double play. FSU finally found their offense in the top of the third, as Haller led off with a single, followed by another by senior Gracie Nelson. A foul out and fly out put them to their final out, where senior Arden Miller hit a clutch two-RBI double to put Frostburg up 2-1.
Â
Magee was replaced on the mound by freshman Izzy Dietrich, as WVWC put the first two batters on through a double and error. Dietrich then worked a strikeout and groundout, putting the runners in scoring position, where a single on a full count pitch put Wesleyan back ahead 3-2. Frostburg hit right back in the fourth, as Donaldson and senior Ally Myers lined back-to-back doubles to tie things up at 3-3. In the bottom half, Dietrich got three consecutive grounders as FSU looked to take the upper hand in the fifth.
Â
It appeared as if things would head to the bottom half without much offense after a line out and pop up to short, but Miller kept the frame alive on a double. Stetler and Russo then followed suit, while Donaldson mashed her second homer of the weekend to suddenly put Frostburg up 7-3.
Â
WVWC led off their at-bats with a double, followed by by a single and RBI groundout to bring the deficit down to three. Continuing the streak of offensive innings, Frostburg worked some more two-out magic in the sixth, as Nelson reached on a single before junior Kylee Piconi legged out a triple to make the lead 8-4. Dietrich wouldn't allow a baserunner the rest of the way, setting Wesleyan down in order through the sixth and seventh innings to secure the four-run win.
Â
Donaldson led the offense in going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored, while Miller and Nelson added two hits apiece. Magee allowed one run through two innings of work, while Dietrich tossed the final five to earn the win.
Â
Nelson drew a walk to start game two but was thrown out trying to steal second, as back-to-back strikeouts ended Frostburg's at-bats. WVWC was able to get the upper hand in the bottom half, using a pair of walks and singles and a double to plate three runs, as Donaldson worked out of further damage with a pair of strikeouts. Russo and Haller drew a pair of one-out walks in the second, but neither would advance after a fielder's choice and strikeout.
Â
Donaldson was much calmer in the next frame, putting the side down in order and paving the way for a big FSU third. Nelson worked a one-out single, then Piconi and Miller both were awarded free bases. Another K threatened to end things, but Russo walked in a run while Haller and Myers each had a knock to take a 4-2 advantage. After a pitching change, a pair of passed balls and a walk scored another run, while freshman Mackenzie Monahan lined a two-RBI single to grow the lead further. Keeping the offense churning, Nelson reached on an error while Piconi and Miller were both walked, then Stetler plated another pair on a hit for a stunning 10-2 lead.
Â
In the bottom half, Donaldson put Wesleyan down 1-2-3, getting the hot Frostburg bats back to the plate. An error and fielder's choice had Myers on first, while Magee drew a walk and Monahan singled to load the bases. Nelson brought a run home on a single, then Piconi lofted a sac fly to left to put the score at 12-2. WVWC still couldn't manage anything against Donaldson, going another inning without getting a runner on. Russo received a four-pitch walk before stealing second in the fifth, eventually reaching third on an error. Junior Morgan Gross drove her in with an RBI groundout, making it a 10-run game. Donaldson made sure of the mercy rule win, getting out of an error and single by striking out the side for the 13-3 final.
Â
Nelson and Monahan each recorded a pair of hits, while Stetler and Myers drove in two RBI apiece. Donaldson went the full five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six.
Â
With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 15-1 on the year, while Wesleyan drops to 7-15. The Bobcats will remain on the road to face Fairmont State on Wednesday, March 25 at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
