MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team pulled out a 9-3 win over Walsh on Friday to begin their weekend in the Atlantic Region Crossover.
The Bobcats sent sophomore Zach Dodson out for his third start of the season, as he continued his his early success, going through four scoreless innings, only allowing one Cavalier baserunner via a walk and striking out five. Frostburg's offense was also kept in check through the first three frames, with only two combined runners on a pair of walks. That changed in the top of the fourth, as junior Jackson Shalick doubled to lead off, followed by senior Jake Holler and redshirt sophomore CJ Charmichael getting hit by pitches to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from junior Logan Helser brought Shalick home, then after junior Konner Pittman walked to put a man on every base again, another sac fly from junior Johnny Antonelli got Holler across the plate. Keeping up the momentum after a double steal to get runners on second and third, junior Brian Scott singled up the middle to add two more runs for FSU, then freshman Drew Jordan knocked a double in the left-center gap, scoring Scott to give the Bobcats a 5-0 advantage.
Both teams went down without much fuss in their next at-basts, bringing WU back up in the bottom of the fifth. After starting the frame with a strikeout, Walsh was able to get a runner on thanks to a Frostburg error, then a triple scored their opening run. Out of another swinging strike, FSU's second error of the inning brought home another score, though a fly out kept the damage limited to a 5-2 lead. .
With the Bobcats going down in order in the sixth, graduate Ty Morris toed the rubber and breezed his way through that frame and seventh before FSU would add more cushion to the advantage. Carmichael got things started in the top half of the eighth with a single, advancing to second on a Helser walk, however two quick outs threatened to end the scoring chance. On a clutch at-bat, Scott came up to the plate and sent one through the right side, scoring Carmichael for the sixth run of the day.
Morris was efficient yet again in the eighth, working around a one-out single with a pop up and fielding a grounder himself to end the inning. When the top of the ninth inning came, Frostburg added three more insurance runs, as Schalick led off with a knock and came into score on a Holler double that missed going over the fence by mere inches. After a fly out, Helser stepped up to the plate with two outs and belted one over the left-center wall for a two-run home run to give the Bobcats a 9-2 lead.Â
WU drew a one-out walk followed by a double in hopes of getting some late offense, as they were able to plate a run on a grounder back to the mound. Their miracle bid would fall well short, as a pop fly to left ended the contest with FSU coming out victorious 9-3.Â
Shalick and Scott each recorded multi-hit games, with the former going 3-4 with two doubles and a walk, as the latter went 2-4 with three RBIs. Dodson tossed five innings, allowing two runs on just one hit and tallying nine strikeouts, while Morris and junior Evan Biddle combined for four innings with one run and three combined strikeouts.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 5-2 while the Cavaliers fall to 3-2. The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, February 28, as they face Bloomsburg at Mylan Park in Morgantown at 3 pm. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
