Muha, Spinelli Lead Women's Basketball to Senior Day Win Over Senators

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team led from start to finish in their Wednesday 82-66 home victory over Davis & Elkins on Senior Night.

Prior to the game, FSU honored its pair of seniors in Caitlyn Sullivan and Sa'Niyah Council as they round out their Bobcat careers.

Frostburg opened the game with a lead before the clock started, as the Senators were given an administrative technical, with sophomore Julie Spinelli knocking both down. After FSU took the opening tip, Sullivan worked into the paint for a jumper, then junior Jenna Muha converted a pair at the line to take a 6-0 advantage. Having gone scoreless for the first two minutes, D&E got themselves on the board with a three and a mid-range jumper, as the next three minutes turned into a back-and-forth affair, with Sullivan converting and and-one and Muha being found by sophomore Ayla Hileman down low, while the visitors countered with an old-fashioned three-point play to pull within 11-8.

The Frostburg defense held Davis & Elkins in check for the next two and a half minutes, as Muha netted a pair of baskets either side of Spinelli hitting from range to take an 18-8 advantage. The Senators tried to get themselves back within touching distance on an 8-2 run that culminated in back-to-back triples but lay-ins from Muha and sophomore Laekyn Flinn kept the Bobcats ahead 24-16 at the end of the quarter.

D&E opened the second with five in a row on a three and layup, as Muha tried to steady the ship after being found by junior Riley Nelson. It took two minutes for the next points to be put on the board, as the Senators made a pair at the line before Spinelli hit a much-needed trey off Sullivan's assist. Hileman then matched Davis & Elkins jumper-for-jumper, holding a 33-27 advantage with four minutes until the half. After another mid-range hit from D&E, Spinelli got to the line and made both, while the visitors could only make one of two, then freshman Ella Sabatos got a put-back to fall to push up 37-30. The Senators would have the final say of the half, netting a floater in the lane to go into the break down by just five.

The first minute of the third featured back-and-forth action, as D&E hit a jumper and a three, while Muha put home an and-one and Spinelli was found by Hileman under the rim for a 42-37 score. Spinelli then hit another from behind the arc while Muha grabbed an offensive board and put in another bucket plus the foul to go up by 11. Davis & Elkins tried to get some momentum back by hitting another triple but wouldn't score again for another three minutes. During the stretch, Flinn netted back-to-back buckets on feeds from Spinelli and redshirt sophomore Mandy Roman, who then got a steal-and-score to lead 54-40 with four minutes left in the frame.

For the next two minutes, the Senators tried to get themselves closer, putting in an and-one and another deep make, but layups by Spinelli and Roman and a push shot from Flinn kept the advantage at 14. D&E put in another old-fashioned three-point play, then the sides traded a free throw apiece before the visitors scored on breakaway at the last second to pull within 61-52 at the end of the period.

FSU locked in defensively for the first five minutes of the fourth, allowing just one field goal during the stretch. Sophomore Sydney Snyder opened the Bobcat offense through a pass in transition by Roman, who also fed Muha before Spinelli drove baseline and Hileman made a pair at the stripe to build Frostburg's largest lead so far at 69-54.

Spinelli then got a putback to fall while Flinn had a great pass into Sabatos to finish either side of a Senator lay-in, as neither side was able to score for the next two minutes. Trading buckets on each trip down the court, Hileman and Muha netted jumpers while Roman tacked on a pair of freebies as the lead stood at 17 with 90 seconds to go. Davis & Elkins scored on back-to-back trips but the highlight of the game would come on FSU's final possession, as Council kicked the ball outside for freshman Karlee Hawkins to nail a trey, putting the victory at 82-66.

Muha led all scorers on 22 points, coming just a rebound shy of a double-double, which Spinelli did reach at 21 and 10. Roman filled up the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and a pair of steals.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 14-13 on the year, while D&E drops to 1-27. The Bobcats will conclude their regular season on the road against Fairmont State on Saturday, February 28 at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
