CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team earned a late comeback 3-2 victory over Ashland on Friday courtesy of a junior Jackson Shalick walk-off.
Â
Getting the start on the bump, sophomore Zach Dodson was supremely efficient through the first four innings, allowing just one baserunner on a walk. FSU wasn't able to capitalize on offense, however, as they managed to get on base in each frame but never advance through a hit by pitch and three singles.
Â
Entering the fifth inning, the Eagles finally got through to Dodson, singling up the middle and advancing on a wild pitch. With two outs, a single through the left side brought home the game's first run, though Dodson was able to get out without further damage. Neither side was able to generate much in their next at-bats, as graduate Ty Morris came on in relief at sat AU down in order.
Â
Frostburg was finally able to get some pressure in the bottom of the sixth, as Schalick roped a one-out single into left and stole second. Junior Logan Helser followed up with a two-out walk, but a groundout to first ended the threat. It took Ashland just one batter to double their lead in the seventh, as a solo homer to right made the score 2-0.
Â
In the bottom half of the inning, FSU put up a response, as junior Johnny Antonelli drew a one-out walk and was replaced on the bases by freshman Tanner Cunningham, who moved to second on a passed ball. After a flyout to center, freshman Drew Jourdan was able to sneak the ball through the infield and bring Cunningham home to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Â
Junior Joey Serafin was entrusted to pitch the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 frame, picking up a strikeout in the process. The Bobcats looked to even things up in the bottom half, as an infield and a single put a pair of runners on, however a groundout, strikeout, and flyout quickly put the threat away. Serafin then was able to work out of trouble on his own in the ninth, as he set the first two batters down swinging before giving up a single and a wild pitch before striking out the final batter.
Â
Frostburg began the bottom of the ninth with junior Brian Scott being hit by a pitch and Jourdan drawing a walk. Both runners advanced up on a fielder's choice, then Schalick drove both in with a single into right to walk things off with the 3-2 victory.
Â
Schalick, Helser, and Jourdan all recorded multi-hit games, as the Bobcats racked up four drawn walks. Dodson tossed five innings allowing just one run, while Morris and Serafin combined for four innings of work with one run and five combined strikeouts, the latter earning the win.
Â
With the victory, FSU begins the year 1-0 while Ashland drops to 0-1. The sides will play again tomorrow, February 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
