Paige Notches Three Assists in Women's Soccer's Shutout Win Against Wheeling

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team took their fourth straight shutout win with a 3-0 decision against Wheeling at home on Wednesday night.

Nearly ten minutes into the first half, the Bobcats took the first shot of the game, with junior Mollie Rebuk missing left on a powerful hit from about 30 yards out. Eight minutes later, FSU began to ramp up some pressure, with junior Cassidy Paige hitting a shot just wide on her left foot, then senior Chelsea Pettyjohn made a run behind the defense but shot right at Cardinal goalkeeper Katelyn MacInnis. Frostburg finally go their breakthrough after 20 minutes, as Paige sent a perfect cross into the box that was met by Rebuck, getting her header just past MacInnis for a 1-0 lead. Taking advantage of the momentum, the Bobcats then quickly regained possession after the kickoff, as Paige played a brilliant one-two with junior Ana Davis, who tapped inside the left post to put score at 2-0.

FSU continued to generate chances, with senior Madison Hinton firing wide right from just outside the box before Paige tested MacInnis on her left once more but shot too close to her. A couple minutes later, sophomore Reese Rizzo tried her luck, missing wide right after dancing around a couple defenders. With 15 minutes to go, WU put up their first shot of the night, working a free kick routine 35 yards from goal that Jeanery Diaz sent well wide, as neither side managed much else until the break, with Frostburg still up 2-0.

Looking to extend their lead, the Bobcats generated the first two shots of the second half within the first 10 minutes, both missing right from junior Ainsley Wilson and Paige. Wheeling had their best chance of the evening shortly after, as Rosie Caley sent a high curling effort just off the top right corner of the crossbar and out of play. After 15 minutes with neither side getting away a chance, the Cardinals had back-to-back shots, with the first blocked and the second producing an astounding reaction save from junior goalkeeper Kayla Doty.

Continuing to look for a way back into the game, Wheeling made another pair of chances five minutes later, with Diaz hitting one wide and Doty needing to dive to her right and parry away a shot destined for the bottom corner. Frostburg managed to get control of things for the final 10 minutes, as freshman Mia Hudson had a fairly tame effort go right at MacInnis, followed by sophomore Audrey Meadows putting one high. With two minutes left to play, Paige drove down the right side again and looked to find the bottom left corner, with MacInnis getting a hand to it but pushing it right into the path of sophomore Emma Hostetler, whose run was rewarded with a goal to cap the 3-0 win.

The Bobcats held a 14-6 advantage in shots, with seven on target compared to the Cardinals' two. Doty enjoyed her first clean sheet of the season, as Paige's trio of assists tied her for the third-most in a single game in program history.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 12-2-2 as WU drops to 1-13-2. FSU will next hit the road on Sunday, October 25, to face Davis & Elkins at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
