Nichols Nets Career High in Women's Basketball Loss to Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team fell on the road 109-84 to Glenville State Wednesday.

GSU got out to a quick start, holding the Bobcats scoreless through the first two and a half minutes while making a pair of threes and a jumper to lead 8-0. Redshirt sophomore Mandy Roman got FSU on the board with a jumper in the lane, as the defense kept the Pioneers two just two free throws over three minutes while sophomore Sydney Snyder hit from deep before assisting classmate Julie Spinelli and redshirt freshman Sophie Nichols added a basket to pull within 10-9. Glenville scored back-to-back baskets before Nichols added a trey, while Spinelli got a putback, an assist to Roman, and a triple to put FSU ahead 19-17. The final two minutes belonged to GSU, as they scored 10 unanswered to head into the second up 29-17.

Junior Jenna Muha got the next period started for Frostburg on a feed from freshman Zaria Gaskins, but the Pioneers answered with back-to-back threes. Spinelli was found by Roman for lay-in after Muha split a trip at the line but Glenville's offense stayed in high gear, putting in the next five to stay up by 14. Redshirt sophomore Riley Nelson was also found by Gaskins for a floater in the lane before GSU pulled away on an 11-0 run to lead 49-26. FSU's only points the rest of the half would come from split trips at the free throw line, with the hosts taking a 56-30 advantage at the break.

Spinelli opened the third quarter with a three, to which Glenville hit back with seven in a row before sophomore Ayla Hileman knocked down a jumper, as she wound up scoring the next seven Bobcat points. The Pioneers maintained their 30-point cushion, as Spinelli got to the cup and went perfect at the line alongside Gaskins, while Nichols added a steal-and-score to make things 82-48. Hileman and Muha combined to go three-of-four at the line while Nichols hit from deep to go into the final frame down 83-54.

FSU found some offensive rhythm to start the fourth, as Nichols and Hileman knocked down back-to-back shots from behind the arc, while Spinelli drove the lane for and and-one and Nichols tacked on a layup to make the score 85-65. Nichols then got to the foul line while Spinelli made a triple, though the Pioneers put their advantage back up to 25. Roman and Spinelli got the next three points at the stripe, while Hileman hit Nichols for a trey.  Spinelli scored the next four between the line and a jumper, then Nichols did the same with a lay-in, putting the final score at 109-84.

Spinelli led FSU with 28 points and six rebounds, while Nichols added a career-high 24 with four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 9-10 on the year, while Glenville improves to 15-3. The Bobcats will return home to face Concord on Saturday, January 31 at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
