Pioneers Net Second Half Goals to Cancel Out Neama's Strike in Men's Soccer Loss

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team fell on the road to Point Park by a final score of 2-1 Saturday.

Sophomore Dom Good had the first look at goal for FSU, putting a curling effort wide of the post within the first three minutes. After a Pioneer effort was blocked by the Bobcat defense, graduate Mateo Cuadros had a great chance to take the lead, but he dragged his shot wide from just outside the 18.

Both sides found chances difficult to come by, as both goalkeepers made comfortable saves while a pair of shots went wide and high for each team. As halftime drew near, graduate Abdur-Rahman Neama gathered the ball just inside the Pioneer half and tried an audacious chip shot, which keeper Gregorio Capponi couldn't deal with, resulting in a 1-0 Frostburg advantage.

The hosts came out of the break with a flurry of chances, determined to get themselves back in the game. After forcing sophomore Jan Foret into a diving save, Guy Lehrer drove down the left-hand side and crossed to an open Frido Gefrorer to pass into the back of the net to tie things at 1-1. PPU's onslaught continued, as Foret had to make another save two minutes later to maintain the draw.

FSU finally settled in and had a trio of chances all saved by Capponi from Good, sophomore Mason Salvadge, and senior Kevin Garcia-Torres. After back-to-back Foret saves, the Pioneers got a pair of corners from which they sent two shots over the bar and had another two blocked.

Neama nearly earned a brace to give the Bobcats the lead back after being played down the right side, but his left-footed strike was blocked before getting close to goal. Freshman Nate Kennedy then had a shot from outside the box too close to Capponi, while senior Jason Guevara and freshman Frank Stare both sent efforts off target.

With 15 minutes to go, Point Park thought they had taken the lead after a ball got loose in the box, but freshman Spencer Davis made a goal-saving tackle to send the ball out for a corner. The teams traded off-target shots as time continued to tick down, then with under four to go, Foret sprawled to his left to keep out a Lehrer shot, but the rebound fell right to Lorenzo Grispello to tap home for the 2-1 advantage, which wound up being enough for the hosts to come out victorious.

PPU held a 20-15 advantage in shots, with eight on target to the Bobcats' six.
