Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Fast Start Gives #3 ESU Win Over Field Hockey

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell at home 5-0 to No. 3 East Stroudsburg on Sunday afternoon.

Within the first five minutes, the Warriors came out and were awarded three penalty corners with six shots on the cage, as two of them found the net, both of the stick of Minke Klijn. ESU continued to pepper senior Zoe Barnes in goal, drawing three saves before Megan Rafter made it 3-0 after eight minutes. A pair of shots went wide while Barnes made another save before Elaiana Rivera-Lagalla polished off the visitors' strong quarter with another goal and a four-goal advantage.

The Bobcat defense and Barnes were much improved in the second quarter, though East Stroudsburg still commanded the majority of possession. Barnes had saves at the four- and seven-minute marks, with chances more limited. Another effort was blocked before Barnes fended off a penalty corner with another save. As time ticked towards the half, ESU had three more corners but only produced a shot stopped by Barnes for a scoreless frame.

Frostburg continued to stay determined defensively throughout the third, as the Warriors were limited to just two shots on target. It took seven minutes for the visitors to register their first effort, which went wide, then saw another blocked four minutes later. Barnes stepped up twice more in the final two minutes to keep the deficit at four going to the fourth.

Just over two minutes into the final period, FSU made a foray into attack and were awarded a penalty corner, however they weren't able to generate a shot out of it. At the other end, East Stroudsburg earned one of their own and after seeing a shot blocked, Klijn popped up once again to finish out her hat trick and take things to 5-0. The Bobcats had a couple chances late on getting the ball up the field, however they still weren't able to break through the Warrior back line. ESU had another effort blocked in the final minute, while Barnes made her 12th save of the day as the game ended with the five-goal loss.

With the result, Frostburg falls to 0-6 on the year, while East Stroudsburg improves to 7-0. FSU remains at home to face Slippery Rock on Tuesday, September 23 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
