FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Softball team dropped its home doubleheader to Glenville State by final scores of 13-1 and 6-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After the games had concluded, FSU honored its five seniors in Cristina Sommerkamp, Allyssa Albright, Samara Funk, Hanna Binek, and Katie Chapple as they round out their Bobcat careers.
Â
The Pioneers wasted no time in their first at-bats, knocking a pair of singles either side of a sac bunt to plate the game's first run. After a fielder's choice put two outs on the board, GSU kept the inning going with another couple singles to score once more for an early 2-0 advantage. Frostburg was able to load the bases in the bottom half, as junior Gracie Nelson put a double into left-center while classmate Arden Miller walked and Funk followed with an infield single to third. Glenville was able to get out of trouble with a strikeout and groundout keeping the visitors in the lead.
Â
Each side managed one hit in the second, as Sommerkamp lined a single to left-center and moved up on a sac bunt but was held stranded after a pair of pop ups. After two quick outs, the Pioneers were once again able to benefit from keeping their inning alive, as a walk and single were followed by a double into the gap in right-center, scoring both runners to go up 4-0. Once FSU went down in order, GSU broke the game open in the fourth with three straight singles to start the frame, followed by a sac fly and two-run home run combining for four runs and an 8-0 score.
Â
The Bobcats again went quietly in their trip to the plate, while Glenville kept their offense churning in the fifth. Two singles and a fielder's choice put a run home followed by an RBI groundout and a three-run homer to put things at 13-0. Down to their final at-bats due to mercy rule, junior Ashlynn Routzahn drew a walk to start the bottom half, being pinch-run for by freshman Ava Fair, who moved to second after a wild pitch. Coming on as a pinch-hitter, sophomore Maddy Shaw ensured there wouldn't be a shutout, as she ripped a ball up the middle to score Fair, as the final stood at 13-1.
Â
Game two began in similar fashion to the first, as a walk and hit by pitch put a pair of runners on with two outs, as a dropped pop-up allowed both to score for a 2-0 Pioneer lead. FSU didn't manage a hit until the bottom of the second when junior Olivia Stetler smacked a ball up against the fence in right-center for a double, but she would be left there after a pop up and foul out. GSU padded their advantage in the third with three singles and a double plating two more runs to move ahead 4-0.
Â
Shaw drew a walk to start the bottom half while freshman Bri Russo looped a ball over first for a single, but two more balls caught in the outfield kept the Bobcats off the board. The Pioneers still racked up the hits in the fourth, with three singles, a sac bunt, and a double steal putting things at 6-0. There would be only one hit between the sides during the fifth and sixth innings, while Funk reached twice on Glenville errors but never made it past first. Back-to-back singles to start the seventh threatened to put more Pioneer runs on the board, but Miller made a great catch in left and caught the runner off with a force at second to end the frame. Binek lined a single into left-center leading off the bottom of the seventh but would be left on base following a pop-up, strikeout, and fly out for the six-run loss.
Â
With the sweep, Frostburg drops to 10-28 on the year, while Glenville improves to 28-13. The Bobcats are right back in action on Monday, April 14 for another home doubleheader against Concord beginning at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
