McDonald's Six Scoreless Innings Help Baseball to Series Lead Over Senators

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team defeated Davis & Elkins 8-1 on Sunday in game one of their doubleheader, as game two was postponed to a later date due to weather.

After deciding to move the competition up a bit to an earlier time, Frostburg had no problem showing what they do best on both sides of the ball, getting two runners on base in their first two looks, as sophomore Ryan Bouma was credited with the first hit of the game on an RBI single to left for a 1-0 lead.  With junior Jake Holler then next up to bat, he did the same thing, sending one into left field as well, bringing in another run for the Bobcats to see a 2-0 game.  Senior Jacob McDonald got the nod from the bump for FSU on defense, recording a strikeout to start and end the inning.

Sophomore Brian Scott led off the second with a double, as a single from sophomore Jackson Schalick put runners on the corners for Frostburg.  With just one out, freshman Manny Hall recorded an RBI single to right to bring in Scott, while a two-RBI double from senior Doyle McNew then cleared the bases, all for a 5-0 score in favor of FSU.  McDonald got out of a jam to end the second, as Davis & Elkins rocked two hits and loaded the bases, with McDonald leaving all stranded to push the game into the third.

Both teams saw a hit in the third, with junior Kade Abrisz pushing a single to right for the Bobcats.  The Senators showed another leadoff hit in the fourth, as McDonald worked for three straight outs to leave the runner on and keep D&E scoreless.  Both squads continued to produce a slow offense in their next at-bats, both seeing a 1-2-3 go around from the plate in the fifth.

Redshirt freshman CJ Carmichael rocked a triple to right to kick off the sixth, as an RBI single from Schalick pushed the game to 6-0.  McDonald saw another perfect inning in the bottom of the inning, facing the minimum and recording two K's to finish out his time.  Frostburg added two more runs to their advantage in their last at-bats, with Bouma and Haller getting on base, both to be brought home on another triple from Carmichael for a 8-0 game.  Sophomore Cristian Bonilla was given the mound in the seventh, securing a double play early in the inning, but Davis & Elkins was able to crack three hits to get one run on the board for an 8-1 final.

Schalick and Carmichael each finished the day with a pair of hits, combining for three runs and three RBI, while six other Bobcats recorded one hit.  McDonald threw six phenomenal innings, giving up just four hits, two walks, and zero runs while striking out eight in his second win of the season.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 17-7 on the season, while Davis & Elkins falls to 3-21.  The Bobcats await the rescheduled date for their final game of the series with D&E, as for now FSU prepares to take on Indiana (Pa.) on the road in a single nine-inning game on Wednesday, April 2 at 3 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
