Women's Lacrosse Remains Undefeated in Conference Play with Dominant Win Over Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team continued their undefeated conference play run with a dominant 21-6 victory over Wheeling on Saturday afternoon.

Frostburg started their scoring right off the bat with freshman Megan Gray giving the Bobcats possession off the opening draw control.  Graduate Camden DeMaio found the ball in her stick in FSU's offensive half, sending the ball over to junior Neila Haney for the first goal of the game just a minute and a half into action.  Haney traded shots with Wheeling in the next minute, as senior Grace Dickey was credited with her first save of the day.  On their next look at an attempt, DeMaio was given another assist as junior Syndey Stone sent one into the back of the net for a 2-0 game.  Dickey stood in the way of the Cardinals' next look, before senior Julia Badolato sent one in unassisted to move the game to 3-0.  Badolato kept her own scoring run going, seeing the next two strikes for Frostburg as WU was also able to get on the board to see the contest at 5-1.  DeMaio put in her first shot of the day off a free position opportunity, while her and senior Delaney Devers were each credited with a caused turnover on the defensive end.  Dickey racked up one more save in the quarter, before DeMaio and Haney each cashed in one more goal, bringing the game to 8-1 after the first.

Both teams saw a slow start to the second, with Wheeling sending their first attempt at goal wide.  Senior Kerri Hayes took a look at goal for the Bobcats to being the quarter but was denied, as a CT from senior Megan Keller gave FSU back the ball, as junior Natalie Williams fed Haney for the first score of the quarter to sit the game at 9-1.  Just over a minute later, Badolato fired another one in the back of the net for a 10-1 score, as both squads battled for the new few minutes.  Dickey continued her success in goal, collecting two more saves, as Haney tucked another one in goal to put FSU on top by 10.  The Bobcats defense continued to excel against WU, as turnover from the Cardinals led to another goal from DeMaio.  With under three left in the half, Wheeling tallied another score to their total, as Stone netted the final goal of the quarter in response to leave the halftime score at 13-2.

The Bobcats worked quickly coming out of the break, continuing their momentum with Haney scooping up the draw control and Hayes connecting off a free position shot.  WU answered with their first goal of the half two minutes later, as Haney kept the scoring energy going, knocking down another one for a 15-3 score.  WU's next look hit the crossbar, before Dickey was given another save in goal.  Haney and Stone each worked for another goal to end the quarter, as Wheeling got one to go in the final five minutes.  Senior Nicole Gray made her way into goal for Frostburg to finish out the quarter with a save and a 17-4 FSU lead heading into the fourth.

Gray started the fourth with another save, as junior Sara Weingarden found herself with a caused turnover.  The Cardinals denied the Bobcats' first two shots at goal in the quarter, but senior Brittyn Leonard was able to get the third one for Frostburg to go, sending it home off a free position attempt.  Not even a minute later, Leonard fed freshman Makenzie Kerner for a score to extend Frostburg's advantage to 18-4.  Gray was given one more save in goal as Wheeling fought for two more scores to bring the game to 19-6 with around four to play.  As time ticked down, Leonard found herself with two more assists to finish out the day, finding sophomores Abbey Warner and Gianni Leonardi each for a score, leaving the game at a 21-6 final.

Haney paved the way on offense for Frostburg with six goals and one assist for a total of seven points, while Badolato was next with four goals, and Stone and DeMaio each provided three with the latter dishing out two assists.  DeMaio finished with a team-high four draw controls, while Haney led the way in ground balls with four.  Junior Jessie Bare led the defensive effort with three CT's, while in goal Dickey finished with six saves and Gray was credited with three.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-6 on the season, while Wheeling drops to 4-4.  The Bobcats next return home to host Davis & Elkins for their Cancer Awareness Game on Thursday, April 3 at 5 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
