WILMINGTON, Del. - The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team fell in the final seconds of their contest with Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 18-17.
Frostburg quickly made their move on offense, with senior Grace Dickey sparking the moment after a game opening save, setting up graduate Camden DeMaio for a dish to junior Daniella Boss for a 1-0 Bobcat lead a minute and a half in. Wilmington responded right away, scooping up the next draw control and firing one away inside to tie the game not even a minute later. Senior Kerri Hayes was denied on FSU's next attempt, but DeMaio answered with her own off a feed from junior Neila Haney to immediately put Frostburg back in front. Dickey saw another save on the defensive end, before senior Natalie Williams found junior Emily Lamoreaux for a 3-1 game. The Wildcats worked for back-to-back goals to tie the game at 3-3 in under minute, as Haney knotted her first of the day to put FSU back on top 4-3. WU tied the game once again with a response goal, before the Bobcats took over to finish out the quarter. Hayes put Frostburg in front before another tie game, as Haney and DeMaio scored back-to-back goals to move FSU in the lead 7-5 with 3:19 left in the first. Wilmington got one more to go in the quarter, but Lamoreaux responded to put the Bobcats in control 8-6 after one.
The Wildcats opened the second with a quick goal, sending in four straight shots to start the quarter, with Dickey being credited with two saves. DeMaio saw Frostburg's first look of the second, as she was able to find Haney for a tally to put the Bobcats back up by two. FSU came up with a stop on defense, blocking WU's next try, setting up Lamoreaux for a strike at the other end to move the game to 10-7. Wilmington quickly sprung for a duo of goals in just over a minute to get within one, before neither team saw a score for three minutes. Dickey stood in the way of the Wildcats' next shot, until WU was able to get one by on a man-up opportunity to tie the game at 10-10. DeMaio and Williams wasted no time to take back Frostburg's lead, knotting back-to-back goals in the same minute to give FSU the 12-10 advantage at the break.
Sophomore Maya Mosslih caused a turnover to begin play in the third, as Lamoreaux's shot on the other end was saved. Wilmington got their first shot of the quarter to find the back of the net, allowing them to get within one. Boss then caused a CT, as WU was able to recover and tie the game once again, this time at 12-12. DeMaio fired away a duo of shots, trying to give the Bobcats back their lead, as Dickey recorded a save on the other end. Haney slotted one home to give FSU the advantage for not even a minute, as the Wildcats sent one in for a 13-13 score. Hayes took the next attempt for Frostburg on offense, as Wilmington capitalized off the miss to take their first lead of the game at 14-13 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
WU started the fourth with a shot that was sent high, before getting one to go to increase their edge to 15-13. Hayes then aimed a shot wide, before Haney connected on another to get FSU within one with five minutes gone in the quarter. Both Haney and DeMaio fired away a shot each in the next two minutes, before Haney tried again, this time tying the game herself off a feed from senior Julia Badolato for a 15-15 score. The Wildcats took a timeout looking to regroup, setting up a play for a shot that ended in the stick of Dickey. Both teams stayed quiet for almost five minutes, trading shots back-and-forth that were all off target. At the 3:51 mark, Haney succeeded on yet another strike, putting the Bobcats on top 16-15. FSU stayed in the lead after Badolato saw her first of the day for a 17-15 game with 1:57 left to play. Wilmington's next two looks were denied, as Frostburg looked to close out the game. With 1:39 left on the clock, WU rallied for two quick goals to tie the game at 17-17 with now 50 seconds left in regulation. As time ticked down, FSU was unable to get a chance at goal, as the Wildcats slid one into the back of the net with 17 seconds left, allowing them to capture the last second 18-17 win.
Haney led the way on offense for Frostburg, seeing a season-high seven goals to go along with three assists for a total 10 points. DeMaio was next with six points off three goals and three assists, as Lamoreaux also recorded a hat-trick on the day with three scores as well. Dickey recorded 13 saves in goal.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-6 on the season, while Wilmington improves to 4-3. The Bobcats return home to open up MEC play on Sunday, March 23 at 12 PM when the team welcomes in Charleston (WV). For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
