FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State men's wrestling team took fifth place in the NCAA super regional tournament and for the second consecutive year had two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA championships. 

FSU came in as just a second-year program and competing against three of the top 25 teams in Division II with national powerhouses Gannon, Pitt-Johnstown, and Kutztown all also vying for national qualifiers and regional champions. 
 

Senior Thierno Diallo came into the day looking to make a repeat trip to the NCAA Championships, having earned All-American honors last season. Diallo would lead the Bobcats in team points on the day with 16.5, with his first win coming by way of a 17-2 tech fall. In the semifinal match he would face off against 17th-ranked Javien DeLeon from Kutztown and won by pinfall. In the championship bout, he would end up just shy of the title, losing to Brian Melamud from Felician in the first-place match. With his runner-up finish, Diallo will return to the NCAA championships to become Frostburg's first-ever two-time national qualifier. 

Joining Diallo on the trip to the finals will be graduate Owen Butler in the 174 lb class. He won his first match of the day in a narrow 4-3 decision but then lost in the semifinals to the eventual first place finisher and eighth-ranked in the country Patrick Jackson from Gannon. Fighting back through the consolation bracket, Butler would win twice by major decision to secure his third overall national championship appearance and first with the Bobcats.

FSU also had seven wrestlers finish in the top six of their weight class. Freshman Austin Lewis came up with 10.5 team points and finished fourth at 197, coming back from a loss his first bout of the day to make it to the third-place match after an 8-3 decision and a pinfall. Against the same opponent from his first round, Lewis would just miss out on becoming the third Bobcat to reach nationals with a loss by pin. 

At 125, freshman Nate Wilhelm also lost his opening round but recovered for a pair of decision victories before dropping the fifth-place match with 5.5 team points. Sophomore Gage Heilbrun reached the quarterfinals after a pinfall victory, as he also competed for fifth after a tech fall and another decision, losing out to his first opponent for 9.5 points. At 157 lbs, redshirt junior Nico D'Amico lost by decision to start the tournament but recovered with  consecutive victories by decision and major decision. He just missed a shot at competing for third before earning a win in the fifth-place match by another major decision for 9.5 total points. Sophomore Mason Buckler won his quarterfinal match by pinfall for a trip to the semifinals but would not advance further, though he still secured eight points. 
 

Overall, the Bobcats had 25 combined wins for 77 points, just two away from Millersville in fourth place, with the aforementioned UPJ, Gannon, and Kutztown taking the top three spots in that order.
