SALISBURY, N.C. – The Frostburg State Softball team split on the day to pick up their first win of the season, falling 11-10 in a close contest with Flagler and taking their game with Converse 11-1.
Frostburg started game one with senior Katie Chapple in the circle. Chapple made quick work, facing the minimum and getting out of the top of the first on a double play. Senior Laura Gilford would drive a ball in the gap to start the bottom of the inning off with a double, with junior Olivia Stetler driving in Guilford on a single to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Momentum would swing to Flagler starting in the second, where the Saints added seven runs over the next three innings to go up 7-1. Stetler added two more RBI to her day with a two-run bomb in the bottom half of the fourth, cutting the game to 7-3. FSU would surrender four runs in the fifth, as Flagler built their lead to 11-3.
The Saints would need every run they could get with the Bobcats looking for a comeback, with junior Gracie Nelson starting off the action for Frostburg in the fifth with a double, scoring Gilford who reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded in the seventh, Gilford drew a walk to score a run, as senior Samara Funk hit into a fielder's choice to score senior Cristina Sommerkamp making the score now 11-6. With the bases load once again, Stetler continued her at the plate, hitting a grand slam to left center to get FSU within one. The Bobcats rally fell just shy, as Frostburg was unable to get anything else to go in the inning, dropping the game 11-10.
Game two on the day for Bobcats came against Converse, as FSU continued the first inning like they left off in game one. Frostburg batted around to start things off, putting up five runs in the first. FSU capitalized on five walks and an RBI single from freshman Izabella Donaldson, before Funk hit a solo homerun in the second to make the score 6-0. Converse would get one run back in the bottom of the second making the score 6-1 FSU.
Defense and pitching would take over until the top of the fifth. Donaldson hit a three-run homerun to center, before Stetler, still on fire from the first game, would add to her RBI count with two more Bobcats crossing the plate. The FSU lead of 11-1 would be enough to get the win in five innings.
Donaldson picked up her first win as a Bobcat, pitching a complete game, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI to help her cause. Frostburg finished with four long balls on the day, with two coming from Stetler. Stetler finished the day 4-for-7 with nine RBI, while Funk was 4-for-6 on the day with an RBI in each game.
With the win in game two, the Bobcats are now 1-3 on the early season. FSU is slated to rematch Flagler and Converse again tomorrow with games at 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
