FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team lost to Mansfield at home Saturday afternoon, falling 5-3.
Â
The Bobcats welcomed the Mounties to town on Homecoming weekend looking to avenge their 4-0 loss from earlier in the season.
Â
FSU had the first real chance at goal during the game, earning back-to-back corners five minutes in as senior Paige Leitzel's shot of the second went wide of goal. Six minutes later, MU scored the fist goal of the game after going down a player, picking off a Frostburg pass and finishing the breakaway with a back-handed goal. Those would be the only two shots of the frame, headed into the second with the visitors in the lead.
Â
In reverse fashion, the next quarter began with both teams taking a combined four shots, as senior Zoe Barnes made back-to-back stops off a corner, while Letizel had an effort blocked and freshman Makenna Buffington was denied by Lydia Miller. Frostburg kept the pressure up, as sophomore Sofia Boyle sent an effort wide before senior Aubree Dorsey was turned away by Miller off a corner. A yellow card shown to FSU stopped their momentum and allowed Mansfield to run a well-worked corner for a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats responded quickly, however, earning a corner just 30 seconds later. Junior Mikyla Rineer inserted the ball to Leitzel, who hit a rocket into the left corner of the goal to cut the deficit in half. In the final minute of the period, junior Morgan Sparks made a goal-saving clearance on the line to keep the game at 2-2 headed to halftime.Â
Â
Frostburg would come out of the break strong, taking five shots at goal in the first two minutes of the frame. Off of the Bobcats' fourth corner within the first two minutes, Leitzel and junior Emma Price both had shots stopped by Miller, but sophomore Rachel Young converted the third attempt into the back of the net to tie things at 2-2. Mansfield peppered the Frostburg goal over the next over the next five minutes, but Barnes was equal to all five efforts against her. Both teams were shown yellow cards, which cooled off the offenses the rest of the period.Â
With the game tied going into the final quarter, the Mounties took advantage of back-to-back corners, getting a pair of goals to go up 4-2 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Bobcats would again respond from a corner of their own, as Rineer found junior Piper Taylor, who passed back across goal for the former to finish and get within 4-3. With FSU pressing for a tying goal, the Mounties would find their needed insurance goal with five minutes to play, holding the Bobcats without another shot as they came away 5-3 winners.Â
MU held a 20-13 advantage in shots, including a 15-10 mark in efforts on goal.Â
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats are now 2-9 on the year, while Mansfield improves to 4-6. Frostburg next travels to West Chester on Saturday, October 11 for a 1 PM game. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com
