Volleyball Falls to Concord in Opening Match of Conference Play

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team fell to Concord on Friday night in their conference opener by a score of 3-1.

Frostburg got off to a quick start, knocking down the first four points of the match off kills from seniors AJ Thompson and Beverly Braun and freshman Dani Kunkle, all that were assisted by freshman Emery Kuebler.  FSU continued to dominate, picking up points left and right, earning two scores off errors from Concord.  Kills from Kuebler and Kunkle moved the Bobcat's lead to 10-4, as the Mountain Lions struggled to keep up with Frostburg's momentum.  CU scored four consecutive points to get within four, before a kill from Thompson broke their streak.  Concord continued to add to their score, bringing the game to 14-12, soon taking a 16-15 lead.  The Bobcats were able regroup, taking the next four points to jump back in front 19-16.  The Mountain Lions fought back to tie things up at 19, before two errors from CU and a kill from sophomore Paige Mock put Frostburg back in front 23-20.  Concord was able to pull within one, but Braun knocked down the final point of the set for a 25-23 win for FSU.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to 2-0 lead to start set two, before a kill from Braun, followed by a CU error, tied the game at two apiece.  Concord sparked for another pair of points, before Frostburg took the next four, guiding them to a 6-4 advantage.  Kills from Thompson and junior Amanda Knieper helped the Bobcats keep the lead, as kills from Kunkle and Mock pushed their lead to 11-7.  Concord was able to find their rhythm, stealing the next four points for an 11-11 game.  FSU took a 12-11 lead off a kill from Mock, before CU jumped in front 13-12.  Both teams continued to rally, swapping points back and forth, before the Mountain Lions rallied for three straight points to hold a 19-16 advantage.  Frostburg fought back for 19-19 tie, off points from Thompson and Kunkle, but Concord was able to win the fight, outscoring the Bobcats for a 25-21 victory in set two.

Both teams started off exchanging points in set three, with the score seeing a 3-3 tie.  Kunkle and Knieper each swatting down a kill put FSU ahead 5-3, before CU tallied two points of their own for another tie.  The Mountain Lions were able to find their spark, knotting six consecutive points to jump in front 11-6.  A kill from Kunkle broke the run, before Frostburg totaled the next four points to tie the game at 13 apiece.  Both teams went back and forth for the lead, before the Mountain Lions tallied a trio of points to gain a 19-17 advantage.  Mock and Kunkle swapped kills to see a 20-19 score, with Concord still on top, but back-to-back kills then from Braun and Kunkle tied the set up at 21.  The Mountain Lions took the next two points before Braun hit down another kill to make it a one point game, but CU stole the next two points to come out on top 25-22.

Once again, both teams showed the same energy to kick off the set, with the score reading 4-4.  Off two attack errors by CU, the Bobcats were given a 6-4 edge, before Concord regrouped for an 8-6 lead.  Frostburg picked up a point off another attack error from the Mountain Lions, but CU went on to rally, scoring the next five points for a 13-7 advantage.  A kill from Braun and a service ace from Brunk tallied the next two points for FSU, but Concord was able to respond with two points right back.  A trio of kills from Mock, followed by a service ace from Kuebler, brought the Bobcats back within two, but CU took the next three points to remain in front with a 18-13 score.  A kill from Braun broke Concord's streak, before the Mountain Lions earned three more consecutive points to push their lead to 21-14.  Frostburg earned one more point off another CU error, but Concord was able to strive for the 25-15 win to end the match.

Braun and Mock each finished with 12 kills, as Kunkle was next up with 10.  Kuebler dished out a game-high 44 assists, while Knieper led the team in digs with 19, with Kunkle (17) and Kuebler (12) filing in right behind.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 4-7 on the season, while Concord moves to 6-8.  The Bobcats continue conference play in their next match, facing Point Park at 7 PM on Tuesday, October 1, with the place to be determined.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com
