FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell in overtime to No. 9 Pace, with the final score on the afternoon reading 3-2.
Both the Setters and the Bobcats played a high defense, attacking on the other team's end while creating offense and taking advantage of counter attacks. The possession in the first quarter was split between the teams. Frostburg was the first team to apply pressure earning a corner with just over a minute of play. Sophomore Brianne Macchia put a shot on goal that was saved, before the Bobcats earned another corner. The only other shot on goal came from freshman Hannah Haberkorn, that was again saved by Pace. The game headed to the second quarter even at 0-0.
The Setters broke open scoring early in the second, when Jenna McCrudden scored in the third minute of the quarter. After giving up the goal, FSU pressed even more, flipping the field and continuing to apply pressure. Frostburg earned three corners and three shots, with one of those shots being on goal from graduate Emilie Bonhivert. Senior Lina Goetz also had a look at goal, with the Setters goalie coming up big, as the Bobcats went into the half down 1-0.
Frostburg was still unable to break through with a goal in the third, having opportunities off three shots and five corners. Junior Paige Leitzel, Goetz, and Macchia all fired away at goal, but were unable to get anything by. Pace capitalized on the Bobcat's inability to find the back of cage, adding an insurance goal in the third to go up 2-0.
FSU hit the field in the fourth with a mission. Leitzel scored Frostburg's first goal of the game 30 seconds into the quarter. Pace, with now a one goal lead, tried to work as much clock as possible, while still taking advantage of the Bobcat's defense playing high. FSU found life late in the quarter, making one last push in the final minutes. Leitzel again found the back of the goal, this time from the top of the arch on a hard low shot, sending the game into overtime with a 2-2 score.
Pace came out ready to roll in overtime, breaking down the Bobcat's defense for three quick shots, with junior Zoe Barnes having to save one of three. In the eighth minute of the first overtime period, the Setters found enough space to slide the game winner past FSU's defense, picking up an overtime victory over the Bobcats for the second straight year, as the final score read 3-2.
Both teams were evenly matched in the shot category, with Pace (16) having the slight edge over Frostburg (15). FSU led in corners 13-6, while Barnes earned four saves in goal.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 1-2 on the season, while Pace picks up their first win of the season for a 1-3 record. The Bobcats return to play tomorrow, hosting Lander for a noon start. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
