FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team took their home opener by a final score of 3-0 over District of Columbia on Wednesday evening.
UDC kicked off to start the game, with Frostburg quickly getting their first touch of the ball. Just over two and a half minutes into the game, junior Carlos Quintero Rivas bolted a shot at goal, missing wide left. The Firebirds then marched down field, seeing their first shot of the game, as the ball just missed, hitting the crossbar and bouncing back into play. UDC was able to earn a corner, keeping possession on their offensive half of the field for a few minutes, before the Bobcats received a goal kick to turn the ball in the other direction.
The Firebirds quickly found themselves with another chance at goal, but FSU's defense stood in the way, blocking the shot. Frostburg fired another try at goal with senior Mateo Cuadros slotting a kick but sent it way high. Moments later, Cuadros set up sophomore Hugo Portillo to knot one in the back of the net, putting it in the low left corner for a 1-0 Bobcat lead at the 11:35 mark.
Both teams traded possession over the next span of minutes, until freshman Andrew Denard went for a chance at goal, sending it high as well. UDC regained possession in their offensive half, looking for a try that was blocked again by Frostburg's defense. FSU dominated possession as the half winded out, pounding five shots at goal, compared to UDC's one. Portillo found himself with two more looks, as Quintero Rivas tried to knot another, and freshman Dominic Good sent two in on target. The Firebirds lone shot was saved by freshman Jan Foret, for his first save of the day.
Frostburg looked to add to their lead to start of the second half, as senior Caleb Dell sent his header off a corner just high and over the goal for a UDC goal kick. The Firebirds struggled with their offensive attack, pushing the ball up field, but were called offside. Around five minutes into the half, the Bobcats put up back-to-back shots with chances from Quintero Rivas and Cuadros, with one being blocked and one being saved. UDC took their first shot of the half around two minutes later, pushing the ball high. Both teams played around with the ball, both looking to push up field, as after another shot from Frostburg, this time by senior Randy Ferrin, Denard fired a shot inside that was saved by the keeper, as Portillo was there to tap it in for a 2-0 FSU advantage.
With around 30 minutes left in regulation, the Bobcats kept their momentum, moving the ball around to try and add to their lead. Senior Abdur-Rahman Neama got in on the offensive action, taking a ball high, before Cuadros slid the ball to Dell off a free kick at the 63:30 mark, to push FSU ahead 3-0.
With everything going right for Frostburg, they looked to keep applying pressure on both sides of the ball, as Good found the ball at his feet for another rip at goal but was stopped by the goalie. With senior Zach Harpel and freshman Christian Mathieu getting the last looks at a score for FSU, the Bobcat's defense only allowed two more shots from UDC to end the half, one being sent high and one being picked up by Foret, all helping lead Frostburg to a 3-0 win.
Portillo finished with two goals on the day, as Cuadros was credited with two assists. Foret stood tall in goal with just two saves, as him and FSU's defense pick up their second clean sheet of the season.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 2-0 to start the year, as UDC falls to 1-1-1. The Bobcats remain at home to host Point Park for their next match, welcoming in the Pioneers at 7 PM on Saturday, September 14. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
