SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team dropped their first road game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Slippery Rock by a final of 12-2.
Slippery Rock got things started right away, collecting the first draw control of the game and marching down for their first goal after setting up their offense. Not even a minute later, SRU did the same thing, tacking on another goal off the next draw control to jump ahead 2-0. Frostburg picked up the next draw control, setting up junior Kerri Hayes for a try at goal on a free position attempt, but she fired high. The Rock continued to stay strong on both ends the field, not giving the Bobcats a shot on goal, while adding another score over two minutes later. FSU struggled to get past SRU's defense, turning the ball over on their second shot clock violation of the quarter. Off the turnover, The Rock took advantage, knotting another one in the back of the net for a 4-0 lead at the 7:32 mark. Almost a minute later, graduate Lilly Stephens attempted a try at goal, but was denied by the goalie. Junior Nicole Gray tallied her first save of the day off the next shot attempt from Slippery Rock with 5:59 left in the first. Both teams traded turnovers as time winded out in the quarter, as sophomore Neila Haney fired her first shot at goal, sending it wide right, as SRU held a 4-0 advantage after one.
The Rock wasted no time to knot their first goal of the second quarter, advancing their lead to 5-0 27 seconds in. No team saw a shot over the next five minutes, as both teams' defenses stepped up, as at the 9:49 mark FSU got on the board with a man-up goal from senior Camden DeMaio to bring the score to 5-1. Slippery Rock answered back right away, going up five again, winning the draw control and scoring on the next possession off a free position. The Bobcats picked up the next draw control, which led to both teams swapping turnovers, setting up senior Anna Kearney at goal, as her shot was denied. Frostburg was able to calm SRU's offense down, causing another turnover, as DeMaio and sophomore Emily Lamoreaux both saw tries at goal but were unable to connect. The Rock attempted three more shots to end the quarter, with Gray getting in the way of all three, keeping the score at 6-1 in favor of Slippery Rock heading into the break.
Both teams saw a slower start to offense in the third, until SRU captured another goal at the 12:44 mark to increase their lead to 7-1. Junior Megan Keller continued to provide her part on defense, forcing another turnover by The Rock, this time setting up Stephens for another shot at goal, that was again denied by the goalie. Gray picked up a pair of saves over the next few minutes, as Hayes received an opportunity at a free position shot but was denied. Lamoreaux got in on the defensive action for FSU, creating a turnover by Slippery Rock. With 4:18 left in the quarter, Gray picked up another save, before SRU sliced another one back into the next for an 8-1 score. Keller caused another turnover on the defensive end, while Gray was credited with another save, as the score remained 8-1 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Gray denied the first shot from The Rock to start the fourth, before the hosts were able to put one away to advance their lead to 9-1. SRU scooped up the next draw control, setting themselves up for another chance at goal, but the Bobcats were able to block the shot. Junior Brittyn Leonard saw a try at goal, putting her shot wide right at the 10:05 mark, before The Rock took another rip at goal, but Gray stood in the way, picking up yet another save. Slippery Rock succeeded on their next try at goal, pushing ahead for a 10-1 lead. Graduate Maura O'Neill kept Frostburg going on defense, being credited with a caused turnover, setting up Hayes for another try at goal, with her shot being blocked. O'Neill caused another turnover on defense, before SRU tacked on another goal to their advantage, bringing the game to 11-1. With 2:54 left in regulation, Haney put FSU on the board once more, scoring the team's second goal of the game, allowing the score to read 11-2. Slippery Rock added one more goal to their lead, with the game ending 12-2 in favor of The Rock.
DeMaio and Haney were credited with the goals for Frostburg, as Hayes led the team with three shots. O'Neill was credited with four caused turnovers, as Keller finished with three, while Gray earned a total of 11 saves.
With the loss, FSU moves to 3-2 on the season, while Slippery Rock improves to 3-0. The Bobcats will return home to welcome in Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday, March 12 at 1 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
