CARY, N.C. – The Frostburg State Baseball team defeats the Mercyhurst Lakers in a 9-inning game on Saturday morning by a score of 6-4.
Mercyhurst went to bat first as senior Max Proctor took the bump for FSU and put the Lakers down with a quick 1-2-3. The Bobcats threatened in the first two innings, putting runners on the basepaths but weren't able to bring them home, going scoreless into the third. Proctor worked through minimal damage in the third and was finally rewarded with a lead, as with two outs in the bottom of the frame, Estrada took a round trip on a two-out homer to go up 1-0.
The Lakers earned a hit in the fourth but saw no further opportunities after a strikeout ended the inning. Allison and freshman Jack Schalick earned back-to-back walks a failed sac bunt attempt and a K threatened to end the frame without a score, but senior Ethan Kiple dropped the ball in right field, sending Allison to score 2-0. Proctor again kept MU quiet in the fifth, then in the bottom half, Estrada walked and advanced to second off of junior Cy Probst's single to center field. A wild pitch sent Estrada running to third, eventually scoring after a wild pitch and balk advanced the runners with Estrada rounding home. Schalick ripped a shot that couldn't be handled at third base, bringing in Probst for a 4-0 lead.Â
After a scoreless sixth, Mercyhurst finally got on the board, using a single to left field followed by a home run, putting two through home plate at 4-2. With the Lakers getting a two-out single, a pitching change put freshman Bryce Hendricks on the mound, striking out the next batter and turning the bat to FSU. A walk from Allison and Schalick being hit by a pitch put runners at first and second, with a sacrifice bunt by Jimenez advancing both runners, then a sacrifice fly by Steen advanced them once more, as Allison crossed the plate. With two outs, a double by Kiple earned him an RBI as Schalick went home with a 6-2 advantage. The Lakers earned two unearned runs in the top of the eighth, making it a two-run game 6-4. Unable to score in the bottom of the eight, FSU would try to close out the game in the top of the ninth. Senior Nate Vermillion was sent into close it out for the Bobcats, getting three batters in a row to strike out swinging, with FSU coming out on top 6-4.
Kiple finished 4-for-5 in the game with a pair of RBI, while Estrada and Probst also recorded multi-hit games. Proctor went 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs while striking out five.Â
With the conclusion of this game Frostburg moves to an overall record of 4-4 while Mercyhurst falls to 1-3.Â
