Theobald Tosses Shutout, Offense Puts 21 Runs Past WVWC in Road Sweep

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team completed an undefeated weekend with a sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan, earning two mercy rule contests of 13-1 and 8-0.

Up against reigning MEC Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-American Kendall Stoffel, FSU couldn't have asked for a better start, with sophomore Arden Miller being hit by a pitch and immediately being driven in on a two-run bomb by senior Jamie Roberts for a quick 2-0 lead. Getting the start in the circle, Roberts proceeded to strike out two of the three batters she faced in a quick bottom of the first.

Frostburg kept their offense churning in the second, as freshman Kylee Piconi earned a one-out single, followed by a double from junior Allyssa Albright to put two runners in scoring position. A WVWC error with two outs kept the inning alive and plated Piconi, with senior pinch-runner Ellie Buckheit also coming in to score on a base knock by Roberts for a 4-0 advantage.

Roberts continued to deal on the mound, allowing just one hit across the next two innings to keep Wesleyan off the board. FSU couldn't be stopped in the top of the fourth, scoring a whopping seven runs in the frame and knocking Stoffel out of the game on their way to a double-digit lead. Piconi led off by reaching on an error, then a pair of singles from Albright and Miller loaded the bases with just one out. Roberts stepped up and laced a double that cleared the bases and began to blow the game open. Junior Cristina Sommerkamp and senior Bri Munday drew back-to-back walks, then senior Ryann Darling was hit by a pitch, earning an RBI for her trouble. After a strikeout gave Frostburg just one more out before ending the inning, Piconi continued her breakout game, singling to score Sommerkamp while Alrbight brought in Munday and Darling on a double that put FSU up 11-0.

WVWC saw a glimmer of offense in the bottom of the fourth, as back-to-back singles put runners at the corners with no outs, eventually plating their first run on an RBI grounder to third. Frostburg wasn't done with their bats yet, as Miller singled, went to second on a wild pitch, third on a fly out by Roberts, and scored on an RBI single by Sommerkamp. Munday followed up with a double to get Sommerkamp to third, as she scored on an RBI groundout by Darling for a 13-1 score. Without much fuss, Roberts set Wesleyan down in order to end the game with a 12-run mercy rule after five.

After game one featured immediate offense, neither team could generate a score through the first two innings, as senior Sydney Theobald was fantastic early on, allowing just one hit to WVWC while getting six to ground out. Roberts again provided the first bit of offense for Frostburg, sending Miller home after a lead-off single with a sharply-hit double to open the scoring. Sommerkamp and Munday knocked two straight base hits to load the bases, with Theobald getting a run across on a groundout. A walk to senior Ava Gnibus brought Piconi up once more, as she sent a ball far enough into the outfield to score Sommerkamp on a sac fly to end the inning up 3-0.

Wesleyan looked to score in their offensive half of the third, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Theobald was able to get the next batter to fly out and keep the hosts off the board. Miller, Roberts, and Sommerkamp continued to rake in the fourth, the former working a double and the latter two both hitting singles to drive across another run. Theobald joined in on the action with an RBI hit of her own, growing the lead to 5-0.

Having run into a bit of trouble in the previous inning, Theobald wasted no time setting WVWC down in order during the fourth, as she was given even more run support in the top of the fifth. Piconi reached base again on a hit by pitch, then Albright and junior Hanna Binek put down back-to-back hits, followed by RBI singles off the bats of Roberts and Munday, going up 8-0. An FSU error was the only baserunner allowed by Theobald in the bottom of the fifth, as she got a strikeout and two grounders to end her day with a five-inning shutout by another mercy rule.

Several Frostburg players recorded multi-hit days, none more than Roberts' six hits, scoring four times while driving in eight RBI. Sommerkamp and Albright each totaled five hits, combining for four runs scored and three RBI, while Munday and Miller each added five knocks, the latter also scoring five times on the day.

Roberts and Theobald combined to allow just one run across both games on six hits, while striking out seven between the two.

With the win, FSU improves to 9-8, while Wesleyan falls to 8-11. Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday, March 20 for a road trip to MEC North Division rivals Fairmont State at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
