FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team split their home MEC doubleheader on Sunday against Glenville State, dropping the first game 5-2 and pulling a 9-4 victory in game two.
Senior Max Proctor got the nod for Frostburg in game one, giving up one hit and stranding the runner on base to start the game. FSU quickly took advantage of their baserunners in the bottom of the first, with senior Ethan Kiple drawing a walk, advancing to second on a single to left from junior Danny Estrada, and coming home to score the first run of the game on an RBI single to center field by junior Mikey Guy. Proctor gave up a hit to lead off the second, but a solid throw from junior catcher Cy Probst to freshman second baseman Ryan Bouma caught the runner trying to steal second. The Bobcats saw a quiet bottom half of the inning, leaving one runner on, as the score remained 1-0 in favor of Frostburg after two.
GSU found their offensive rhythm in the top half of the third, ripping four hits for two runs, as Proctor stranded two on base, with the Pioneers jumping in front 2-1. The Bobcats left one on in the bottom of the third, as Proctor faced three batters in the fourth, with the half of the inning ending on a double play. FSU was able to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, as Bouma hit a lead-off single, advanced to second and third on back-to-back singles from Probst and senior Stafford Allison, sneaking into home plate on a wild pitch. Glenville re-took the lead in the start of the fifth with a 3-2 score, leading freshman Jack Ray to come to the mound, as the Pioneers added two more runs, holding a 5-2 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Frostburg's offense was quickly shut down by the Pioneers in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Nate Vermillion came into pitch in the top of the sixth for Frostburg, striking out the side. Probst recorded the lone hit in the sixth for the Bobcats, knocking a single to center field, but was left on base. Vermillion took care of GSU in the top half of the seventh, giving FSU a chance in their last at-bats, but Frostburg's offense was unable to put anything together, dropping the first game 5-2.
Sophomore Joe Pippin kicked things off from the mound in game two for the Bobcats, earning a strikeout in his first outing. FSU saw a quiet first inning on offense as well, as Pippin struck out two more Pioneers in the top of the second. Frostburg's bats came alive in the bottom half of the second, going for four runs on three hits. Guy was the first runner for FSU, taking first after being hit by a pitch. Bouma then singled to left advancing Guy to second, as both runners advanced after the bases were loaded once Probst was hit by a pitch. Junior Cristian Shertzer singled to right center, scoring from Bouma from third, as the bases remained loaded. Junior Randy Steen then roped a double to right center, clearing the bases to bring the score to 4-0 heading into the third inning.
Pippin picked up two more strikeouts in the top half of the third, as Kiple knotted the lone hit of the frame for Frostburg. Pippin continued his dominance in the start of the fourth inning, as the Bobcats tacked on two more runs to their lead in their at-bats of the fourth. Shertzer reached base with a walk, stealing second and advancing to third on an error by Glenville's catcher. Freshman Jackson Schalick took a walk, as on the final pitch of his at-bat, Shertzer was able to score due to a wild pitch. Kiple then hit a single to right field, pushing Schalick to third, who was able to trot home on an RBI single to right by Estrada for a 6-0 ballgame.
The Pioneers put three on base before Pippin ended his day, as Glenville was able to take advantage of the runners, putting up four runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman Bryce Hendricks was able to strand two runners on base, as the score read 6-4 after the first half of the frame. Frostburg responded right away, as senior Justin Jiminez reached base after being hit by a pitch, coming around to score as Steen put the ball in play, with GSU's center fielder falling, allowing the ball to drop with each runner moving up three bases. Steen was then able to score on a wild pitch, as Schalick drew another walk and was sent around to home due to a passed ball and balk, seeing the game with a 9-4 score.
Graduate Daniel Morgano came into pitch in the top of the sixth, facing three batters and picking up two strikeouts. FSU saw a quick offensive outing in the bottom half of the inning, as Kiple came in to close the game in the top of the seventh, also facing the minimum of batters, sealing the 9-4 win in game two for the Bobcats.
Bouma, Estrada, and Kiple each recorded a pair of hits on the day, with Bouma leading the way with two runs and Estrada picking up the lone RBI between the three. Steen led the team in RBI with three, as Schalick scored a total of two runs as well. Proctor and Vermillion recorded three strikeouts each in game one, as Pippin was credited with his first win of the season, throwing four innings, giving up three hits, three runs, and striking out seven.
