FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team had a tough matchup on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 5 Grand Valley State at home by a final score of 12-4.
GVSU wasted no time to show their offensive ability, winning three straight draw controls and marching down for three straight goals in the first three minutes of the game. Frostburg's first shot of the game came at the 10 minute mark, as sophomore Daniella Boss was denied by the goalie. The Lakers were able to successfully clear the ball, taking advantage of another opportunity on offense, slicing the ball into the back of the net once more for a 4-0 lead. Junior Nicole Gray continued to deny the shots she could in goal from GVSU, earning a save to set up another shot by the Bobcats, with senior Camden DeMaio unable to get past the keeper as well. On FSU's next possession, DeMaio was able to find the back of the net off a feed from sophomore Neila Haney to bring the game to 4-1 at the 4:40 mark of the first. Junior Kerri Hayes and Haney both saw a chance at goal to end the quarter, as the Lakers remained in front 4-1 after the first 15 minutes of play.
Freshman Maya Mosslih caused a turnover by GVSU to start the second, as after five minutes of back and forth play, the Lakers struck again for a 5-1 score. Both teams traded caused turnovers on defense, before Grand Valley tacked on another goal off a free position for a 6-1 lead with 8:50 left in the half. Junior Julia Badolato received the next draw control, setting graduate Lilly Stephens up for a try at goal, as she fired just high. Mosslih caused another turnover on defense, setting up Stephens again, though she wasn't abel to convert again. Off another free position on the next play down the field, GVSU capitalized yet again, increasing their lead to 7-1. The Lakers continued to keep their foot on the gas, finding the back of the net again around two minutes later to tack on one more to their advantage. Frostburg found themselves with a free position chance, as Haney sliced one at goal but was stopped, but then caused a turnover on the other end of the field, as the Bobcats had time to set up a play, with senior Anna Kearney finding Haney cutting through the middle to bring the game to 8-2. Sophomore Emily Lamoreaux forced another turnover by the Lakers to end the half, as GVSU led 8-2 at the break.
Exactly two minutes into the third, DeMaio scored her second of the game for an 8-3 contest. Both teams traded turnovers once more, with Haney and sophomore Isabelle Kelly playing good defense, allowing FSU to get in position for Hayes to send the ball into the net for her first goal of the game and an 8-4 score. Off the next draw control, the Lakers fired back with their first goal of the quarter, advancing the score to 9-4. Around two and a half minutes later, GVSU capitalized on another free position, this time a man-up opportunity, to increase their lead to 10-4 with 7:56 left in the third quarter. With senior Whitney Crosby now in goal for the Bobcats, she was credited with a save on her first attempt of action, as the Lakers received another free position attempt, adding to their lead with five minutes left in the third. Crosby denied two shots from GVSU to end the quarter, as the Lakers went into the fourth and final quarter with an 11-4 lead.
Crosby kicked off the quarter with another save, as Boss was credited with another caused turnover on defense. Hayes fired back-to-back shots with one being saved and one stopped on a free position attempt, as neither team was able to get anything going on offense. Defense continued to be the game in the fourth, as Mosslih, sophomore Jessie Bare, and junior Delaney Devers all recorded a caused turnover. Just under the six minute mark, GVSU saw a try at goal, but was once again denied by Crosby. After another shot from the Lakers, GVSU found the back of the net for their final goal of the game to bring the score to 12-4. Haney fired away the last shot of the game for the Bobcats, as FSU fell 12-4.
DeMaio finished the game with two goals, as Haney and Hayes each had one, and Haney contributed an assist. Kelly scooped up a team-high five ground balls, while causing three turnovers, as Mosslih caused a team-high five turnovers. Gray finished the day with four saves, while Crosby was credited with five.
With the loss, Frostburg moves to 1-1 on the season, while GVSU improves to 2-0. The Bobcats remain at home to host Shippensburg at 12 PM on Saturday, March 2 for their next contest. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
