Sharp Sets Three-Point Mark, Women's Basketball Downs Falcons on the Road

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team took down Notre Dame College on the road Wednesday evening by a final score of 80-67, concluding their season sweep of the Falcons.

It took just over a minute for the scoring to get going for both teams, as a layup by freshman Jenna Muha gave Frostburg the first points of the game. Notre Dame quickly responded, earning their first points of the game on a putback layup. The Falcons scored the next bucket taking a 4-2 lead, as on the next play down the court for the Bobcats, graduate Maggie Sharp knocked down a three to put FSU in front 5-4. NDC responded right away with a three of their own, before the teams played back and forth ball for the next minute and a half. The Falcons saw a 10-5 lead at the 5:40 mark in the quarter, with a free throw encouraging the home crowd. Muha converted a layup underneath before sophomore Emilee Weakley scored her first points of the game to bring the Bobcats within one at 10-9. A free throw by both Weakley and graduate Ciara Thomas gave Frostburg an 11-10 advantage, before Sharp hit another one from behind the arc to push FSU's lead to 14-10. Both teams stayed aggressive to end the quarter, trading multiple jumpers, as the Bobcats found themselves in front 21-17 after the first 10 minutes.

Sharp stayed hot to kick off the second quarter, converting a three once again to build Frostburg's lead to seven. Weakley quickly found herself with a two, as the game stayed 26-17, in favor of FSU, for almost the next two minutes. Thomas kept the offense going for the Bobcats, connecting on a three of her own to push Frostburg's lead to 12. NDC struggled to keep possession on their offensive end, as they scored their first points of the quarter with just 2:31 on the clock. Once the Falcons found the basket, however, they scored eight straight points to bring the score to 31-25. To end the Bobcats scoring drought, Muha laid another bucket in to end the half, as Frostburg had a 33-25 lead heading into the break.

Weakley connected on a jumper to start the third, as NDC was also quick to score to start the half. A jumper from freshman Grace Middleton, a free throw from Sharp, and another two from Weakley increased FSU's lead to 40-27. The Falcons converted a layup and a three from deep to get their deficit under double digits around the 6:43 mark. In the next few seconds, freshman Alanna Tate maneuvered down the lane and laid in an easy bucket off an assist from Sharp to put the Bobcats back up by 10. NDC pushed to get within seven, but Sharp did not let the Falcons get any closer, knocking down another trey from deep to bring the score to 46-36. The Falcons were able to get within seven once more, knocking down a three of their own, as points from Weakley and Thomas saw Frostburg with a 53-39 lead. Both teams traded sets of points to end the quarter, as FSU remained on top 55-41 entering the fourth.

NDC struck first to get the fourth quarter rolling, converting on a deep three. Freshman Mandy Roman put the Bobcats on the board with her first points, connecting on an easy layup on the next possession. Both teams traded scores for the next minute, as the Falcons were able to get within 10 after a three point play. Notre Dame continued to earn trips to the free throw line, sinking two more to bring the game to 59-51 around the 7:30 mark. Sharp continued to keep FSU in front, sinking another three from behind the arc to push the score to 62-53. Both teams were slow to score over the next few minutes, before Weakley went two-for-two from the free throw line and the Falcons knocked down another three. NDC kept the game in range, finding ways to get within seven with 3:03 left, but the Bobcats scored two quick buckets from Tate and Muha to push ahead 70-59. Weakley continued her success at the free throw line, trading perfect trips with the Falcons, but back-to-back layups underneath the basket from Muha and two free throws from Roman saw the game at 78-65 with 20 seconds left. Both teams traded perfect trips to the charity stripe once more to end the game, as Frostburg came out on top 80-67.

Weakley finished with a double-double, putting up 22 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists, tied for the team lead with Tate. Sharp finished right behind Weakley with 20 points, hitting five three pointers to put her at 69 triples this season, setting the program record for most threes in a single season since joining Division II. Muha went for 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting, while also pulling down six boards. In addition to Muha's defensive effort of a pair of blocks and steals, Thomas stuffed the stat sheet with a season-high nine rebounds to go with a pair of assists, a block, and a steal of her own.

With the win, FSU improves to 16-9 on the season with a conference record of 13-5, while Notre Dame falls to 8-17 overall and 5-13 in the MEC. The Bobcats come back home to host Salem on Saturday, February 24 at 2 PM in Bobcat Arena, where it will be the team's Pink Game in support of breast cancer awareness.
