CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The Frostburg State Women's Basketball picked up a hard fought, close victory over the Charleston Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon by a score of 84-83. The victory completed a regular season sweep of the Golden Eagles for 2023-24.
A high flying offensive first quarter saw the Bobcats in front 27-21, as FSU scorched the court shooting a 71% from the field, including 4-4 from three point range. The Golden Eagles would come on strong in the second quarter, jumping from 47% to 55% and would shift their focus to attacking the paint. The Golden Eagles would find 32 of their 48 point at the break by heading inside.
FSU found quite the fight in the second half, with their defense being tested. UCWV entered the third quarter ready to rise to the occasion, hitting at a 60% mark from the field. The physical play continued, as UCWV would pick up 10 points in the third by pestering the Bobcats into turnovers. Heading into the fourth, FSU would move back into the paint as well, picking up 10 of their 16 in the prime location.
The fourth quarter saw both sides dip in the offensive category, with both sides dipping to 30% and 22%, but with the Golden Eagles leading 69-66, had an fight to the finish. The Bobcats found themselves with plenty of opportunities in the fourth, stepping up to the free throw line 14 times, and hitting on 12 of them to manufacture the late surge to capture victory.
Three members of FSU registered double digit scoring efforts: Emilee Wealkey with 24 points, Maggie Sharp with 19 points, and Jenna Muha with 15 points. The Bobcats have now won four of their last five contests. The win improved FSU to 13-9, 10-5 in MEC play while UCWV falls to 13-9, 9-6 in MEC play.
