FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team lost a close one to Seton Hill (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon, falling in their home contest 86-81.Â
Â
Seton Hill put in the first points of the game, before an offensive rebound and a steal saw the Griffins in front 6-0 to start. SHU continued to roll, knocking down a three from deep to start the game on top 9-0. Sophomore Alanna Tate hit a jumper to get Frostburg on the board, with senior Taylor Smith giving the assist. Senior Harley Herndon then laid in a bucket in the paint, as the Bobcats quickly game back for a 9-8 game with under six to play in the first. Both teams swapped a basket, helping Seton Hill remain in front, as they built their advantage 15-11. A layup inside by senior Emilee Weakley, followed by her converting the and-one, put FSU back within one. With over two minutes left in the quarter, the Bobcats captured six straight points, with scores from Weakley and sophomore Grace Middleton, to push them in front 20-18. The Griffins connected on another trey from outside the arch, but Frostburg fought to end the quarter up 24-21.Â
Â
FSU built their lead to five to start the second, with Smith driving in for a layup in the paint. SHU quickly retook the lead, scoring the next seven points for a 29-26 game. An and-one converted by sophomore Jenna Muha tied the game at 29, but the Griffins rallied for a 36-29 lead with four minutes left in the half. Freshman Julie Spinelli spiked some energy for the Bobcats, knocking down a three from deep, but Seton Hill continued to answer back, sinking their own three on the other end. The Griffins extended their lead to 11, before another layup from Muha, followed by another three from Spinelli, brought the game to 44-38. Both teams tacked on another layup to their score, ending the half with SHU on top 46-40.Â
Â
Muha sunk two free throws to open up the third, but Seton Hill pushed for a 7-0 run to start their offense in the second half. A layup from Tate brought the game back to within single digits, as a layup from Spinelli sat the score at 53-46. Weakley traded treys with SHU, as both teams responded well to each other on their offensive ends. Back-to-back buckets from Weakley and Middleton got the game to 60-57 with 2:30 left in the third, but again the Griffins answered with a three, putting them right back in front by six. Weakley tallied five points to end the quarter, seeing the score at 67-62 heading into the fourth and final quarter.Â
Â
Weakley connected from behind the arch to start the fourth, putting FSU down by just three. With everything going right for them on offense, Seton Hill racked up five more points off an offensive rebound and another three, jumping back on top 72-64. Scores from Tate and Smith brought Frostburg's deficit to five with just over six to play, as after a slow two minutes, Weakley knocked down another triple to put the game at 75-73. SHU scored a layup on their next possession, followed by 2-for-2 trip from the free throw line to go back up by six with 3:45 left in regulation. FSU kept it within five, before a jumper from the corner by Smith put the game at 81-78 with just over a minute left. Now forced to foul, the Bobcats sent the Griffins to the line twice, where SHU just put in two out of four free throws. With a 83-78 score and 32 seconds left, Tate hit a huge three from the corner to bring the game to 83-81. Sending Seton Hill to the foul line again, where they just connected on one, Frostburg's attempt at a game-tying three was off the mark, as hoping to get the ball back once more, the Bobcats were forced to foul, as the Griffins converted their free throws to take the game with a 86-82 final.Â
Â
Weakley led all scorers with 32 points, shooting 14-for-21 from the field, while grabbing eight rebounds. Tate (11) and Spinelli (10) both finished in double figures, as Smith, Muha, and Middleton each contributed eight points. Smith dished out eight assists, while Weakley, Tate, and Middleton all finished with three. Muha pulled down five boards, while Spinelli saw four.Â
Â
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 2-2 on the season, while Seton Hill improves to 4-0. The Bobcats next go on the road for the first time this season, taking on Bowie State at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, November 19. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.Â
