FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team was in control from start to finish in their 4-0 home win over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday evening.
Â
Over the first 10 minutes, D&E had the upper hand in creating chances, as they had one effort go wide and another curling towards senior Katie Sterne's goal, though she was able to make a catch on the goal line. FSU kicked into gear at the 14-minute mark, as senior Mei Homman sent a corner into classmate Cat Smith, as her header was cleared off the line.
Â
Two minutes later, a mix-up in the box on an awkward bouncing ball nearly gave the Senators the opener, but the effort from Frederique Morin went high over the bar. Smith then tested her luck from distance, putting the shot just wide, before senior Mackenzie Alonso and junior Jayme Sooy both shot straight at keeper Monica Birkelund.
Â
Winning a corner with just under 25 minutes gone, Homman sent a drilled ball to the near post, where it was met by junior Carly Gillette before the defense could react, planting the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal motivated the Bobcats, as they controlled the rest of the half, not allowing another Davis & Elkins shot. Five minutes after Gillette's score, freshman Cassidy Paige twice tested Birkelund, but both were saved, then junior Morgan Mrizek hit a first time volley from just outside the box that went narrowly high and wide of goal.
Â
Still pressing up the field, junior Skylar Ehart sent a throw-in down the line to senior Madi Allen, who flicked the ball into the area and over Birkelund's head, scoring from an unlikely angle to put Frostburg ahead 2-0. As the half ticked under five minutes, Paige played a ball into the box towards freshman Mollie Rebuck, then as D&E tried twice to clear, she stole the ball from a defender, turned, and fired past Birkelund for a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Â
Neither team generated much in the opening minutes of the second half, until substitute Senator keeper Deimante Antoine was whistled for handling the ball outside the box. Smith stepped up and curled the ball perfectly into the far post for a 4-0 lead. Six minutes later, Davis & Elkins had a great chance to get on the board, but sophomore Mia Graff made a fanastic one-on-one save to preserve the team shutout.
Â
The Bobcats then regained control once more, as freshman Rayiah Davis had a pair of efforts go high and wide either side of classmate Amber Ignudo testing Antoine from distance. With 20 minutes remaining, sophomore Chelsea Pettyjohn consistently got into attacking positions, seeing one shot blocked and another smartly saved by Antoine.
Â
As time ticked down, junior Hannah Clagett cut in from the left wing and tried to find the near bottom corner, but Antoine was down to keep her shot out. At the other end, an attack down the right side from the Senators brought a ball into the feet of Manoela Piraja, but she couldn't get enough purchase to send it past freshman Kayla Doty, making her first career save and finishing out the Bobcat clean sheet 4-0.
Â
FSU held an 18-7 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 margin in efforts on target.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 8-1-1 on the year, while Davis & Elkins falls to 0-9-1. The Bobcats next travel to Concord on Sunday, October 13 for a 1 PM match. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
