Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Comes Back Twice in Valiant Overtime Loss to #5 Huskies

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team twice came back from a goal down but ultimately fell in overtime 3-2 to No. 5 Bloomsburg at home on Saturday evening.

BU wasted no time getting on the board, as an early run down the right side from Aydan McFarland led to her feeding the ball to the back post, where it was met by Kara Koch just 38 seconds into the game for a 1-0 advantage. The Huskies controlled possession for much of the quarter, earning a pair of penalty corners midway through the period, from which junior Zoe Barnes was called into action to make her first save. As the clock ticked inside the final two minutes, the Bobcats had a breakaway chance through sophomore Emma Price, as she was in one-on-one with keeper Jackie Nevel, who made a save at the cost of a corner, which came to nothing as the period expired.

Bloomsburg again began the second quickly, earning two corners in the first five minutes, with one shot going wide and another thwarted by Barnes. FSU continued to defend stoutly, fending off another pair of penalties and Barnes standing tall once more, as the visitors kept Frostburg without a shot the entire period, going into the half with a 1-0 lead.

Coming out of the break, the Bobcats came out a team reenergized, quickly winning a corner within the first minute. Then, after pinning BU deep in their own half, a ball was fed into the box, where senior Ava Waddell was able to shift the ball onto graduate Emilie Bonhivert for the equalizer with just two minutes off the clock. At the halfway point of the period, a green card against Bloomsburg put FSU a player up, from which junior Paige Leitzel nearly capitalized, if not for a great kick save by Nevel. Not two minutes later, that save proved to be a turning point, as Koch turned provided for McFarland at the other end, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead at the end of three.

With their backs against the wall and just 15 to play, the Bobcats quickly evened the game back up, as off a penalty corner two minutes into the fourth, graduate Ashlyn Cave set up Leitzel to take a touch and fire into the bottom corner to tie things once again at 2-2. Three minutes later, an FSU yellow card gave BU a couple chances at goal, one of which was blocked and the other cleared off the line by sophomore Morgan Sparks. The Huskies' pressure continued to mount, as Barnes was forced into back-to-back saves, as Sparks once more came to the rescue as well, with the Bobcats holding out to force overtime.

Frostburg worked an early foray into the Bloomsburg defense, but weren't able to fashion a shot out of it. Just over three minutes in, BU earned a penalty corner, as the same connection from the first two goals once again came through, with Koch feeding McFarland for the winner at 3-2.

The Huskies held a 21-4 advantage in shots, while leading the Bobcats 12-3 in corners, as Barnes finished with five saves.

With the loss, FSU falls to 3-6 on the year, while Bloomsburg improves to 10-2. Frostburg returns to Bobcat Stadium on Tuesday, October 8 as they welcome Slippery Rock for a 5 p.m. matchup. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
